We replace these comm lights all the time. When the lights go out on these LED its cheaper to replace the entire comm lights than the LED believe it or not.

Your right to replace it. A temporary fix you could have disconnected a couple of circuits that they could live without and put a breaker in where you took two circuits out and back feed the panel with a new breaker.

You’re right whoever did that they spliced two circuits together which caused the two circuit breaker to trip. They caused three hazards. 1 two circuits connected 2 exposed wires and 3 setting the wires on aluminum insulation duct.

depending on situation I sometimes stagger the wires. I'll cut the insulation on the main trunk far enough back that I can create loops from the main trunk line then proceed down the trunk attaching the other wires to the loops of the main trunk line.

Just wanted to help out a fellow electrician with a few tips. At the beginning instead of moving the circuits around to check the breaker, just remove the connected load, then flip the breaker on and verify it has the appropriate voltage coming out of it 120, 240, etc. You don't have to swap it to another breaker. Honestly you didn't have to do anything at all with the breaker. Anytime you hear a loud hum just before a breaker trips, you're gonna be dealing with a dead short. When im dealing with shorts, the first thing i do is determine everything that is on that circuit. Then i turn off every switch and unplug everything from the outlets. Then i see if the breaker will hold. If it does, then flip switches on and plug the items you unplugged back up until the breaker kicks out. In this case, it was a hardwired appliance, device. With those kinds of shorts, your meter is your best friend. Try to find where you can split the circuit in half. Lets say you had 8 receptacles on that circuit with the gate motor at the end. Go to outlet #4 and disconnect one hot. Take your meter, set the dial to ohms and measure between each hot and ground. For a breaker to remain on, you need either 0 ohms (0L) or very high resistance (several thousand or millions of ohms). The hot that has the short on it will show very low resistance <100 ohms. Once you start eliminating items, you'll either be able to identify what it is or isolate it between 2 points (a bad wire). Troubleshooting with your meter will save you from running back and forth to to panel to check and see if the breaker will hold. If you were in a very large commercial building with 100 yards separating you from the panel and the problem, you'd wear yourself out before you identified the problem. Just some tips and tricks ive learned over the 30 plus years of doing residential and commercial electrical and HVAC. Keep up the good work.

Yeah, that is Mesquite. I know the house. I can give you the history and what you got wrong about the remodel. That house was built in 2001, no drywall was redone or wiring moved. Most of that was untouched work from the builders in 2001. Things that changed with the electrical over the years were an outlet was removed for an island that was removed in the kitchen, and there was a sub panel that was added for a large building in the backyard, then removed. That sub standard work passed multiple inspections and someone obviously should have gone through at some point and tightened up the screws. That gfci was never moved, that's exactly where it was and how it was wired since it was a new build.
