As a Giant fan it’s a shame what happened to the Browns! They were the pride of the NFL and now they like the Giants are a utter JOKE!

This is the very first season Vince Lombardi became head coach of the Green Bay Packers. They were an ugly 1-10-1, the season before. The Packers were considering bringing original coach Curly Lambeau out of retirement, but management said no. The executive committee didn't want any of his vitriol in the front office. Prior to his arrival, Lombardi had been an offensive coordinator under Jim Lee Howell. The Packers had their first winning season since 1947 with a 7-5 record and finished in a third place tie with San Francisco in the Western Conference.

I remember Bailey Goss, I think he died young in an auto accident. Chuck Thompson's moniker for 49ers, "prospectors" was unique.

According to both Steve and Ed Sabol of NFL films, this and the 1975 Oakland v. Pittsburgh AFC Championship game were the most violent, brutal and physical games he ever witnessed. The battle between Sam Huff and Jim Taylor in this game was unreal.

So the day after I was born the Bears played to a tie. No additional sudden death playing time? Interesting.

When Lombardi took over this team and watched the films, he decided the most immediate need was at defense - and it’s not hard to see why. He traded for tackle Henry Jordan, safety Em Tunnell, and a year later end Willie Davis and safety Willie Wood (free agent). All four are in Canton . The only player he added those first two years who played a significant role on offense was guard Fuzzy Thurston (they also drafted Boyd Dowler in 1959 but the draft was conducted before Lombardi joined). The pieces were all in place on offense - Lombardi just didn’t know who his QB was.

Bert Reichier (spelling?) #44 the long distance kicker for the Colts, once kicked a 56 yard field goal. It was an NFL Record until Tom Dempsey's 63 yarder to beat the Detroit Lions for the Saints in 1970. I was in the old Tulane Sugar Bowl Stadium on the cold November day to witness his record shattering kick.

Back in that time the pros played 6 "Exhibition Games" to play themselves in shape. There were no OTAs & Offseason Minicamps so most held regular jobs. This Allstar game would have been the 7th for the previous season's Champions. If I remember correctly fans were not forced to buy a ticket to these games as part of the Season Ticket Package. Look how fat some of the Colts' linemen are in this game & how long they played. I started watching football in the 1962 season as a 9 year old & was just telling my teen grandson some of the many changes to the game I've seen throughout the years. He was amazed that the goalposts were on the goal line instead of the end line.

I watched the championship game live on TV. The extreme cold really hurt the Giant offense, especially the Tittle-Schoffner bomb threat. A wide-open Schoffner dropped a sure touchdown pass, something that rarely happened. No doubt his hands were just too cold.

Deacon Jones and Jim Brown are at least two names that young fans need to be aware of when they opine on greatness. And there is almost twice the contemporary passing game compared to most of the '50. The NFL didn't track QB sacks until '82 but there has been an unofficial effort to research them. They make a difference when you are talking best of the defensive players.

The highlights here proved to me at least that Elijah Pitts was a better runner than Hornung. Pitts was quicker and definitely a 1000 yard rusher by talent alone. Hornung was a great team player, blocking, receiving, rushing in the red zone, besides the threat to pass, he was versatile, probably our best comparison in the modern game is Taysom Hill, but Pitts appears to have been a talent who was largely untapped. I wonder what could have been had Hornung been a successful quarterback or if he played Tight End where he probably was more suited.

I agree. It was a lotta fun for us late 50's babies who mostly remembered the very late 60's and all the 70's. Average salary then was about 4 to 5 grand per year. Guys had off season jobs, and played football for the love of it.
