I can't believe I haven't seen this before. I was literally cheering at my screen! In-hub gearing and a trapezoidal steering link! Are you still working on this? I have a design for a 3-point trapezoidal steering linkage that incorporates suspension, that I dreamed up many years ago but never did anything with.

I'd like to contact you regarding this bicycle design in particular. I've visited your website and can't find an email corresponding to you. I've seen your trikes, which look beautiful. I'm concerned about friction in your drivetrain, though, and was wondering if you're interested in discussing some of this idea in particular. Thanks. Matthew I will give you my email if/when I get a response, thank you!

my fist thoughts [ without reading everyone else's] (b4 reading that it may not balance) was that your interesting/peculiar steering pivot, in those combined radii, was to make the steering wheel track off-centre to the side it is steering towards !! But it wasnt.. I noticed when trying to ride a normal bike backward, was that the problem was; to turn left, the steer wheel would track out from under centre of gravity, to the right side, contrabalancing = bad. Perhaps all you have to do is to make your steer wheel track off centre to the side your steering to!!??,, by re arranging your combined radii arms!!!?? Lemmie knO whatchi think

Nice concept, bug there is one thing i dont get. when you disengage the brake on the outside gear, the wheel and its fixed central gear become the élément with the more résistance, and nothing prevent the outside gear to run backward, leading to loss of speed, up to complete stop, unless you are one a steep climb and the bike Will go backward ! i'm very curious to know, thank for answer. is this a school work or personnal hobby ?

Victor Vernay hello, I think this animation shows the sun gear (center gear) moving when the brake is disengaged, however it should not be moving. There's a freewheel mechanism that will make the ring gear to act over the wheel instead of the sun gear. Really nice design by the way.

According to control theory, a bike with backwheel steering is theoretically extremely hard (if not impossible). That is because the pole is to the right of the zero of the transfer function of the bike, where the transfer function for a basic bike with backwheel steering is: G(s) = C*V*(s + V/a)/(s^2 - g/h), where C is a constant, V is the speed of the bike, a is the distance from the center of mass (CoM) to the back wheel, h is the height of CoM and g is the gravitational constant.

You might want to contact me. I have an IHPVA article by Craig Cornelius. He did extensive reasearch into a RWS recumbent. His final bike, the "Vel-Aero" was very ridable. Also, there is another guy here on KZbin with a successfull RWS recumbent. You have great fabrications skills by the way. Your planetary setup is really interesting and novel.

Recumbent bike- rear wheel steering? it is crap! Whats the point of building something that is not useable? This is not a bike, so it can not steer. ITS BULLSHIT. Sorry I hate to waste my time watching baloney.

+ShutterGuts Try thinking outside the box. I tried the same idea on my first Steampunk bicycle ,it didn't work ! But plan B will !! In the process of designing a FWD trike and most likely this will !!

+jesikebiking I have investigated the possibility for a rear wheeled steered bicycle. And i concluded with others that it is not going to work. So when I saw your titled of this video, I was highly anxious to see what you may come up with. You may see my disappointment when I come to find out there is NO riding bike in it. I suggest to rethink the title of the video cause it is misleading. Something like: rear wheel bike in progress. Its great that you develop bikes and I do like to see your progress in the development. A rear wheel trike has been done before more then once so that would be less of an achievement.
@jesikebiking

+ShutterGuts I agree with you 100% that 2 wheel FWD rear steer won't work, BUT- what about.......a delta trike ?? (( in the end will Steampunk it, that will make it different from the other rear steer trikes)) I've been working on mine for about 6 months with a lot of trail and error and am making progress will keep you posted
@ShutterGuts
@ShutterGuts 8 жыл бұрын
+jesikebiking for a delta trike or a quad it maybe better suited. But you'r still faced with some problems but due to the more stable bases due to the more wheels it's less of a problem. The main issue is the very direct steering character which could easily translate in to oversteer. Something needs to balance this out or it would be much to dangerous at any real speed (20 km/ph). The complication factor is that this balance needs to adjust to speed you're going. With front wheel steering this occurs automatic cause the steering will need more force when speed increases. With the rear this effect is opposite. When at more speed your steering input is multiplied in the output. This results in a very tricky steering character. There have been many experiments to showcase. Please keep us updated about the progress and show us new video's :)

+ShutterGuts I know what you mean. Over the last 5 years I've built some 75 to 100 , trikes recumbent steampunk and all of them have different ride features. No 2 handle the same .Learning to rear steer will take some practice . Hopefully my experience as a fork lift driver (80's-90's ) will help Only time will tell ! I'll start out on a large parking lot early Sunday morning LOL :-)

True, Doc. My view also. But the key point is that the rider sits on the front part of the bike, driving the front wheel, with the steering head behind him -- and actually with the axis of steering running up behind his back and through his shoulders/upper back. An unusual centre-steer, with the pivot right at the back of the centre section, perhaps. Great bike though. The one in his vid is Mark 2. He sent me stills of his Mark 1. Slightly less easy ride, I believe. M2 is the real easy.

More than a year from this video and no road test.. So i think that it's not stable and drivable. What a shame! I like this configuration so much.. Brakes it's not a problem and a gear-pack into the hub with 11 speeds are available. An hydraulic fork on the rear would be easily mountable.. but.. if there isn't a road test of this prototype, probably, this project don't work.

Dennis Renner's beautiful creation is not really a true RWS set-up though. I'd class it more as 'Centre-Steer' (like a Python), just with the pivot slightly further rearwards than usual (for a Python).

I have such respect for your abilities. Why don't you try what I tried- make the rear wheel point at the point of contact of the front. This might require a (wobbly?) trapezium linkage but to my mind is the only way to get stability. Good luck. Mike.
