Why are the speed limits different for each train type? And why after Sunbury is the speed limit for VLs on the West Track 160kph but only 115kph on the East Track, despite the speed limits for both other train types being the same on both tracks? I'M SO CONFUSED 😂

Great Video Jason, thank you for sharing, A couple of typo's in the text, but I am sure we all get what you mean! 🙂 2 Questions if I may. 1: You often refer to the T Board sign. What does that mean? 2: Do you know why East side track for much of the trip is a lower speed than the west. From your video they look of equal quality. Thank you.

Interesting video. Appreciate your posting it. I’m surprised that local government invested in light rail given size of population. Wendouree is a large suburb of Ballarat, in Victoria, Australia. City of Ballarat has a total of 10,376 inhabitants at the 2021 census PS - wouldn’t mind riding this route as a commuter. About the same distance as my heavy rail commute but a lot more open country PS2 - nice way to see the local countryside.

Good to see where the Maryborough turn off is too. I was on this track today coming back on the 16.20 from Ballarat. Fast trip.

Jason, your footage brings back many memories for me (I am 67 yo ). I grew up directly opposite Woodend station and see the old water tower still there. As a child my brother (dec. ) and I used to watch the trains and the engines get turned around on the turntable that was there(the hole for it still exists ! ). One day we saw where the tracksman hid the spanner to allow it to be pushed and we would take tuns pushing each other around until we were caught one time and it was stopped! Today the turntable is in Castlemaine used by the historical association and I went there but was not allowed to see it. When I was young and worked in Footscray I went by train from Woodend everyday for several years. Beware of fallen trees as one time on the train coming into Woodend a bracnh sticking out broke every window on one side and despite me sitting next to the window it was man opposite who copped all the glass. He was very lucky! Take care and enjoy your trips!! Thank you for the memories!!

What is the T sign for?
@castorite9777
@castorite9777 Жыл бұрын
It's a section of track about 100m long called a Timing Loop. It works in conjunction with TPWS & its purpose is to protect junctions on RFR lines where Normal Speed is 130/kph or higher by measuring the speed of the passing train. Each Timing Loop has an Approach Signal indicating if it is active or disabled. If the Timing Loop is active, the Home Arrival Signal for the junction it is protecting will be at STOP & must be cleared by the driver by slowing to 100/kph or less before reaching the T Board, if the Timing Loop has measured the correct speed, the Approach Signal for the Home Arrival will indicate a Reduce to Medium Speed aspect & the Home Arrival will indicate Clear Medium Speed, if the Timing Loop was not cleared but the driver is slowing down the Approach Signal will indicate a Normal Speed Warning aspect & the Home Arrival will remain at STOP, if the Timing Loop was not cleared & the driver is not slowing down, TPWS will make an emergency application of the brakes. If the Timing Loop is disabled the driver can continue at Normal Speed. Timing Loops are also sometimes referred to as Speed Traps.

T boards apply to both tracks. Passenger drivers wanted approach operation as they did not trust the enforcement of reduce to medium speed aspects, freight drivers did not want that as once the brakes have been applied they had to build up air for a second brake application. This approach clearing system was a compromise asked for by the drivers. It took a lot of effort to make it work. It is no longer employed on new systems.

Yeah you are 💯 correct with T boards applying to both lines. I tried to keep it simple for the sake of diverging moves as that’s when it applies 99% of the time. It really is a stupid system coming from both freight and pass running on it. Being able to resume normal speed after being slowed down never made sense in my mind.

Think I’ll change that in this public video tho. These vids are edited a fair bit from the original I’ve put together. The original has a lot more info in it like the trainees braking points, shut off locations etc. basically all their driving notes which is why I took it all out.

Having just found your really interesting videos I wish you’d left it all in… I’m 73 yo but just got an interest in how the train system works and would love to learn a bit more detail. I’m way too old to be a driver but too interested to be just a passenger. Maybe a voice over would work for interested parties. Am planning a trip to Bendigo soon. Cheers 👍

Great video. I was the head of Signalling Design and Testing for the RFR project, ex-Westinghouse Signals Australia. I had the luxury of having a Velocity test train at my disposal during the closure when we commissioned the signalling for this corridor. VL speed on the downside of Sunbury on the East Track is 130, not 115.

Thanks mate. Yeah I only made the video for someone I know who’s a trainee at the moment. Only so much you can read about a safeworking system from a book. Much better to see it in action. Figured it may help others in the same situation Can confirm tho (East track down side of sunbury is definitely 115 for a vl at the moment). It definitely never used to be when I was running over it.

I think some of the single tracks really need to be duplicated just like the Hurstbridge Line in Melbourne’s Northeast. But I do know they are building the Airport rail link from Sunshine to Tullamarine but I’m gonna have to wait another 6 years for it to complete.

The whole line was duplicated before the fast track upgrades.they were afraid that the Velos would hit each other in the tunnels and bridges.

@Hooly Dooly The previous LNP was itching to cancel The Overland and replace it with buses, even so it used to run every day. The Vic govt has been subsidising this train, not sure what the SA Labor govt intend.
