Ha, thanks Elle! Love the tree and its story. Have a lovely time - you could have popped in but we're on our way to Aldeburgh for fest. X

Indeed remarkable thumbmanship. I found out about Jim Mullen by looking at arch top guitars that were affordable. He is a brilliant player and the one video that I watched with him explaining how he started to play. Remarkable and I would love to know more about how to play with the thumb. I am a little older for playing the guitar but my fingers don’t hold a plectrum very long, so I also do everything with my thumb. Starting after I retired for keeping my brain active. Well thanks for sharing this although it is all way above my understanding (4years trying to play with youtube)

Hi Stuart and thanks for checking in! According to Jim, the secret behind effective thumb picking seems to be play the wrong way round! Being a leftie, holding a pick just didn't feel right so thumb was more organic. I don’t know what the best way for us mere mortals is.... though I'm a classical player used to using my thumb, the way Jim using largely downstrokes with amazing speed is what sets him apart. Lots of LH legatos together with RH 3 string thumb sweeps will get you somewhere close!

Great, Steve. Only just got around to listening. Brill. It reminds me of Gentle Giant.

@@stevesmith_guitarist6243 You posed the possibility that we (the listening public) may want to "scold" you; I rather think that given the quality of your playing here, that instead of a scolding, you should get a Gold Medal. I think it is work of the highest, or Gold, order. (Obscurity has been my trademark for 67 years)

@@JamesSeaberry haha, I see! A very nuanced compliment indeed. In fact, I feel very much getting to grips with Jim's technique in my case - and in particular, his thumb technique, is a work in progress,... by the time I put the tutorial together I hope to be a bit closer still. Take csre.

Steve, I have been soaking up all the latest music here. I really appreciate the music for Christine, and I love the Old Oak Tree. I still love the one which I often return to, i.e. “In memory of Julian Bream.” Keeping writing and playing Steve, you deserve lots of cups of coffee!

Steve, love this music, it is so you, complex and full of heart and warmth! Coincidently it is a very good picture of Christine, at least of what I know and can imagine. Is the music available? Big hugs to all of you!!
