This is a terrific talk. I do not believe, however, in his notion of the "exceptions" of the "big names". The Big Names are made big by publishers like Penguin Rnadom House! Great books have universal appeal. I would like to meet this fellow.

I'm autistic and there is no way Holly smile is autistic. I can pick up on whether someone is autistic and she isn't. The way she speaks and presents herself. She may ne nerdy and neurotic, but she's not autistic. She's admitted herself that the NHS wouldn't even assess her. It's really easy to pay someone to tell you you're autistic these days, which is why NHS assessments are considered the gold standard. Having people who aren't actually autistic claim autism is actually incredibly, INCREDIBLY, damaging to truly autistic people. However much we mask, we could never be like Smale. She is not a champion for us. Smale is a privileged white woman who seems to have appropriated autism to inject new life into her flagging career.

The kind of hysterical impulse exemplified by this woman always stems from personal neurosis/dysfunction. It is always grounded in dissatisfaction with oneself, and the corresponding desire to drag those down who are free from said neurosis/dysfunction. If we knew enough about Strick, we would see evidence of this. It is a universal principle.
