The Mississippi Delta is not in southern Mississippi. It lies along the river from Memphis to Vicksburg - western Mississippi. Clarksdale is in northwestern Mississippi, not too far south of Memphis.

Legend has it that John the Conqueror was an African slave who brought his tribal 'magic' root with him when he was captured and shipped to America. With this he was able to control his owners into behaving with kindness to their slaves. Hence the name 'John the Conqueror root. I heard there's a shop in San Francisco that sells it!! Listening to Muddy, time seems to have changed the connotations!! Why not!

High John the Conquerer root not only endows the powers of persuasion, but also gives luck in gambling, maintains or restores virility in men, and makes them magnetic to women.

What is interesting about this version is it was recorded with the Allman Brothers without DICKEY being present. So you can hear how close Dickey based his slide style & solo off of Johnny Winter's style

That!, is a top class tune, jesus christ man. I got a 5 pack of the first 5 Mac albums for like 20 euro, put this one on first because i had heard Oh Well before and i was really impressed by Peter Green; man he was good. He could of really gone on to make something really special, what a sound, there's nothing like that man, that sort of dreamy, bluesy, atmospheric, summery guitar and the drumming, its like the whole band understood the rhythm of life. What a guy, i hope he's doing alright.
