Problem with the market in my opinion is that it's oversaturated with red stripes and the vast majority of them look the same but they still want to charge premium prices even though when you go to a reptile show 90% of the animals are red stripe.

With uvb exposure, would that be ok to feed them D3 once/ twice a month?

Yes, calcium with d3 once or twice a month. They are nocturnal so they don't get uvb as good as other reptiles but still get some

I just got my first ever gargoyle (and reptile in general) today! She's got this kind of very light blush pink base with black and brownish stripes, kind of like the one at 19:22 but more red tinted instead of yellow tinted. Gave her the pending name of Bumblebee! I don't plan on breeding geckos, I just wanted a pet, but I'm excited to see what morphs and patterns show up now these guys are getting more popular. The reds seem a bit oversaturated in the market right now, so hopefully some more unique colors and patterns start popping up!

Thank you for sharing! I have only tried glass to far for more permanent enclosures. Which enclosure do you prefer for a 20g + gargoyle gecko?
@southerngurlexotics77649 ай бұрын
At 20 grams a garg will do fine a 10 gal convert or 20 gal equivalent but you absolutely at that size can go ahead and put them in a permanent enclosure of larger size of you wanted to or if you dont have the size up capabilities from having a bunch of enclosures hanging around. I'd just make sure there are plenty of feeding stations in a larger enclosure until it gets adjusted.

Always nice to hear how people keep their animals! There is a LOT of diversity in how we can keep our reptiles. I personally use a combination of 6qt Sterilite, shoeboxes, deep sweater box (Container Store) and various Like It stackable drawers (Container Store). So far, so good. I'm pleased with all of it and honestly need all the different sizes for my New Cal stuff. As always, great info! 🙌

Another great video. I had a couple of questions, what do you use to clean the glass enclosures ? Just water ? And which locale/morph are your leachies ? 😊
@southerngurlexotics77649 ай бұрын
I use water soap and water when it's time to disinfect (about once a month or longer), and I use vinegar and water to try and get streaks out & water spots (it's not the most efficient but most of the time it's clean enough on the glass I'm happy with it).

Thanks .. Which locale are your leachies from ?

Most of them are GTX (GT MIXES) Alot of the GTs with color are bred mixed locales since color is the focus. So most of GTs were bought with color lines in mind (leibermanns pinky line and tru color)

Too small enclosures seems to be a huge problem across all species unfortunately. People become obsessed with growing their collections instead of focusing on better the environments and lives of the animals they have. And it's heart wrenching to see it be done but especially too the puppy dogs of the reptile world (Beardies)..

These things are MASSIVELY long. Lol. Not my faves but if there is ANYTHING I lose in my reptile room 50 times a day , it tongs. I have about 8 different ones and I prefer the shorter ones and thicker at the tip but these that I'm using my mom got me years ago from Amazon. It came in a 3 or 4 pack with a couple straight and curved ones. Due to them being so massive they are usually the ones I find the quickest to use. 😂

Sooo afraid his personality will be violent when he grew up 😢 (or his behavior now is normal to an baby gecko
@southerngurlexotics776410 ай бұрын
They are a nocturnal species so typically even when they don't mind the overhead lights they typically stay in their caves and may poke out their head or tail to absorb the UVB. Rarely will they come out and bask their bodies. You can work with just cinditioning them into getting comfortable with overhead lighting bc either way they have to have a day and night cycle but if you notice that they go off food than take the lights away and just let natural sunlight of the room be the day/night cycle for them and use a heating pad on a thermostat. As far as skittish and running away that it normal for them especially in the first few months of a new home. Once he/she is eating regularly , pooping regularly than you can start working with handling. If they are biting, bluff striking at you you absolutely can try and continue getting them used to you and handling but in my experience the ones that are crazy usually stay crazy. Lol. The more skittish ones that aren't aggressive usually grow into being great for handling with regular conditioning/handling.

I stopped at 9:41 wanna say I been bit by leachies, cresteds, chahuhas and gargoyles and the only bite that hurt was gargoyles bought a extremely nice red stripe and was like let me put it in its tanks it’s 49 grams that sucker bit me so hard I was thinking of hitting it just off of reflex! Leachies unless they latch on only do minor serations to the skin and chahs gonna abbreviate since I don’t know how to spell today, will tag team your hand with their mate but since their bites don’t hurt they just look cute hanging on your hand. But anyway gargoyles are the only gecko that actually made me bleed as of now lol

I've had babies break the skin but superficial little pricks in the skin. I have one sub adult that has made it a Game of biting me regularly and he rarely breaks the skin and if he does it's similar to a small snake bite. They do have needle like teeth but the damage is so minimal. You've gotten lucky on your leachies though. I've seen so many blood Cushing bites from them. I work woth mostly GTs , bigger animals, bigger aggression, and bigger bites so I'm DREADING the day one of mine gets me.

Awesome video the collection looks great. I was wondering about your thoughts on pin worms. I got my babies stool sample tested and it came back positive for pinworms, i talkes to teo vets amd they both said they don't recommend to deworm him. I did read and basically theres two schools of thought. It's normal and as long as it doesn't have any detrimental effects dont do it snd ither ssy to deworm. What do you think?
@southerngurlexotics776410 ай бұрын
I can only speak on my african fat tails and what my vet has taught me them but all bug eaters I know have some parasites in their gut and its perfectly normal but high levels of stress can cause their gut health to get out of whack and they can quickly become sick and overrun with them. I'd always recommend following your vets opinion and if you see that it has caused weight loss, loss of appetite or regurgitation (which all are side effects to parasite overload) then I'd recommend doing something different. Unfortunately alot of the dewormers, antibiotics , pain meds etc for these animals can have negative side effects even killing your animals so it's better to always tread lightly with medicine. My vet regularly tries to have me do non-medicinal options before jumping into medicating unless absolutely needed.

Great video! I started breeding in 2022. I decided to focus on the breeding process the first year to make sure I was doing my very best and to learn everything I could about the species that I wanted to work with. And...I had number 2 in my mind. I started doing local shows in July of last year. The first show cost us about $300 to be at (sales - expenses of the show alone and we were in the negative by about $300). I really thought geckos would be flying off the table...but we haven't gotten there yet. :-P I still really love it and I'm not going anywhere, but I'm definitely lucky that my husband has a good job. Maybe someday it will break even. :-P Oh...and I'm pretty sure you are not all that far from us. :-D

Luckily so far show experience has been an amazing one for me. If I didn't work soooo many hours with my other job I'd defintely do more. Meeting people and talking geckos is one of my favorite things. Good luck with your breeding adventure though. It can be so exciting and rewarding but it ALSO is a lot of work and can get expensive however totally worth it when you start producing beautiful /healthy animals you are proud of and excited to share with others.
