"Superstar" was written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell and originally performed and recorded by Bramlett with her then-husband Delaney Bramlett in 1969 as a duo known as Delaney & Bonnie. The Carpenters recorded their version in 1971 for their third LP, titled "Carpenters" and known to fans as "the tan album" for the color of the album cover. The song became the Carpenters' sixth single and fifth consecutive million-seller, peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the fall of 1971. The recording has become legendary among Carpenters fans, since Karen's lead vocal is a first take, intended only as a guide vocal for the other musicians as they laid each track down. Even more impressive is the fact that she nailed her interpretation, reading the lyrics off a napkin. (Yes, she was that good.) This is really a rip-your-heart-out kind of song. The lyrics are from the point of view of a groupie who had been with a rock star and made the crucial mistake of falling in love with him. And that rock star is never coming back for her. To continue with the theme of wistfulness and longing, try "Rainy Days and Mondays" (also from the "Carpenters" LP) and then "Goodbye to Love" (from "A Song for You").

This song was originally written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell. The Carpenters did not write all their music. Brother Richard chose songs that would fit Karen's beautiful vocals. The version you played while very nice seemed a little higher toned than the original off the Carpenters cream album. Still a great song!

You’re right 2 Pac made a reference to this song. “We might wobble but we wont fall down. We take the gospel from Makaveli, pass it around” Not sure if you seen Bad Boys 4 with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence but they referenced this song in the movie. Look up the Big Bad Wolf scene if you haven’t seen it. Peter Piper is a classic.

"Turntables might wobble, but they won't fall down" is a nod to a toy from the 70s called "weeble-wobbles". The commercial went "weebles might wobble, but they don't fall down".

@ Karen had a timeless voice and could almost sing any genre of music - pop, rock, jazz, blues, country, disco, etc. Each one of their songs were unique in their own way. As mentioned Richard was huge at arranging and composing songs and lyrics with his friend John Bettis. The Carpenter’s rabbit hole is very deep and far. Their music catalog is at least 80-90 songs. They owned the airwaves in the 70s. Do a reaction to this song. Goodbye to Love. Richard wrote these lyrics which are heart piercing. He is also credited to composing the first rock ballad with this song. The story of its composition is nothing short of incredible. Wow, what a talent those two were together. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5LVp3xvmqiUbrMsi=XuMPKlDcraevVeUh

It's good to see people actually reacting with intelligence to expound on the lyrical content of the artist whom they're reviewing. Most of these reaction videos are simply people looking for attention, and they miss all of the key elements of what made the artist and their art legendary. Good upload.

This is from her solo album that Richard did not care for and wouldn't release for years. The Carpenters (as a group) rearranged this song and released it on their final album before Karen passed away. The rearranged version is better than this one.
