Your "Viente Cohol" is clearly 'Raja Puri', and your "Raja Puri" appears to be 'Dwarf Namwah' but would need to see fruit to confirm ID. 'Viente Cohol' has totally different pigmentation in the pseudostem, is not waxy, the bunch is pendent (not at an angle/horizontal), and the male flower bud is much smaller and non-imbricate.
@TropicalGardenGuy18 сағат бұрын
Interesting observation and if true, would be one more reason to avoid TC banana plants. Id be surprized if the Viente Cohol was raja puri though. The healthy plant fruiting at 4 ft would be more of a description of VC as Ive never seen raja puri fruit so small. Both were Tissue cultures which can get mixed up.

A fascinating variety for indoor growing in cold climates as Peter said. Of course not possible to source over here but maybe one day. You'd still need a heated greenhouse here as it would be too big for a house haha

Why do you use your native soil rather than potting soil or compost? Are you concerned about those leading to root rot?
@TropicalGardenGuy4 күн бұрын
Yes
@RandyOm4 күн бұрын
I grew them in Chico, CA without removing the outer membrane and without a raised bed. I had to start them indoors to get a long-enough growing time. I enjoy your videos. Thanks for making them. P.S. Papayas are plants rather than trees.
@TropicalGardenGuy4 күн бұрын

@@jared8268 As annuals
@cedarmulligan38622 күн бұрын
I've also found that if I just stick them in dirt, without removing the membrane, they sprout fairly easily. I've lost two, likely to root rot though, so the raised bed idea might be worth a try here in Phoenix.
@jared82682 күн бұрын
@@cedarmulligan3862 Raised beds can help address a lot of challenges we face with growing tropicals here in the Central Valley. Drainage to prevent root rot is one benefit. Upgrading the growing medium from our heavy clay soil to something looser is another benefit. Finally, raised beds lift the plant and root zone a foot or two above grade, and in certain situations ( like planting on a slope ) this can offer limited protection against cold. Papaya benefit from raised beds, and so do mangos, most of the sapotes, most of the wax apples, most of the eugenias and even guavas and avocados. It’s worth the time to build and fill raised beds rather than just planting in the ground.
