I really like your perspective as a singer and band leader. I enjoy some guitar player channels but I'm a singer, band leader and lead player so i really agree with the way you see things. Your ideas about bandmates with less talent being more productive as team players is spot on.

Do they alow just a single guitarist to play or does it have to be a band

I never tried IEs but I “imagine” it to be good for voice (on one ear) while you get the guitar directly from the amp (mine are very loud on stage anyways). So you would have one ear for vocals and one for the rest of the band (also trough wedges). This way you’d have the best of both worlds, no? Wouldn’t that work? Really curious but too afraid to take the leap without confirmation from someone who tried this before…
@BlackBeltMusician

I tried it with one ear and it was awful. It’s a full commitment to both ears sealed. It’s weird but saves your hearing and works best if it’s like isolation headphones.

Playing direct blows. For reasons you stated. Retailers are always trying to sell you on direct. They say crap like " the sound guy will love you". Screw the sound guy, he's working for me. Most of those guys have zero musical sensibility, hence why they aren't playing. Live music is dying, so I'm going down swinging.
@davidbrock6263
@davidbrock6263 8 күн бұрын
Thanks for blasting sound guy (that's me). I prefer amps and wedges, all I have to do is augment what is already there. Direct with no amps is much more hassle because the player is completely dependent on me to get "their sound" out of the monitor system, and they never sound on stage like at home.

@@davidbrock6263completely agree with you While we have to use IE’s, I struggle a lot with the sound that I hear at home vs on stage. It NEVER sounds like I practiced. I work also at the mixing board when I’m not on stage and really have a good understanding of what the guitarist’s are needing and not hearing so I’m able to work a lot better with them. IE’s are good for getting rid of what you don’t want to hear by lessening someone else or not and saving the ears from tinnitus ( if you blast the IE) volume
@davidbrock6263
@davidbrock6263 8 күн бұрын
@@BlackBeltMusician Absolutely, I play IE at church on a direct stage, using Helix. But as sound person for live rock bands I find amps and wedges are more simple, and those players are in control of their sound. The direct players are always tweaking and tend to blame me for their dissatisfaction.

My fave thing to play are those muted little motifs , funnily enough they’re quite 80s & very Def Leppard like But all through the 80s Those cats like Paul Jackson jr , Steve Lukather , Mike landau etc . I’m really appreciating that 2 & 4 thing on the snare though as I’m trying to play lots of Triad stuff in hope of playing with a band . I’m laid up with covid at the moment . Got a drummer in the band I'm in and he comes from jazz. We're a rock 'n' roll band and he's been treating every number we do as an opportunity to explore the improvisational possibilities of the kit. We sat him down and said he has to play the damned songs and two and four are the only numbers he's allowed to care about. The rehearsal last night he was a bit sullen at first, but after the third or fourth song of playing in the pocket he suddenly realised he's in a pretty good band. All the rest of us had some air to breath and some space to move in. I don't think he'd actually properly heard the rest of us for the three months he's been in the band!!

I’d definitely like to check it out sometime. I have a lucrative career already but did do some gigging, and realized really quickly that it isn’t for me generally speaking. Basically its work, just different. And the last thing I need is more work stress and drama. But Broadway does sound kind of fun if it’s “going right” so to speak.

What about for keyboard players? Curious to get your thoughts on them.
@BlackBeltMusician
@BlackBeltMusician Ай бұрын
Thank you. I have relatively little experience with them, but: a real piano typically is so low in the mix they can go nuts and it kinda adds a vibe, like a chuck berry song, but when the keyboard goes direct there's so many guys who play a ton of notes and it oblitierates all the other instruments. I mean chord voiciings that have 5-8 notes and doubled notes. for instance if the guitar player is playing in a high register they could play small voicings in the mid range and not even play the left hand. Lots of solo keys players step on the bass and guitar when playing with a band. BUT an acoustic piano doesn't seem to do that in a blues or rockabilly setting, even if they are stepping on everyone. (not ideal, but not as big of an impact)

All the venues in downtown Nashville are owned by a handful of 3-5 people. They hire bandleaders who are “in” with the owners. The bandleaders call the shots, and that’s pretty much why the same 200 song repertoire is prevalent across all the venues. Even the small venues not controlled by the bigs follow suit.

I've seen everything he is talking about. My pet peeve is drummers who play everything the same way. They never push, or lay back on the groove, for what the song needs. And players that have no "swing" in their playing.

You are obviously a dedicated entertainer. That’s the part many musicians don’t get. You’re paid to entertain. Playing cover tunes for drunk tourists can be hard for some musicians who like doing their own thing , they’re thinking is this as good as it gets? Takes a special type to be able to hammer out covers with the best performance one is capable of. It’s easy to get lazy and just make play for the $$$ and not show any energy in the performance.
