Interesting. This video only got recommended to me today. Although this was already uploaded 11 years ago... And being a South African, the unfortunate yet very typical and relevant question popped into my head: How many, out of the original 26 gripens that where bought, are still air worthy today? Could we ward off an attack by any of our neighbors or worse yet, Terrorist cells within our borders? I mean, these jets are not the freshest anymore. They where delivered between 2008 and 2012. Let's say, the youngest of these jets is at least 12 years old already. Sure, IF they are being cared for and maintained and upgraded as they should, they should be able to go a long way still. But who knows if this has been done? I remember a time (+/- 10 years ago) when we would see two to three groups of gripens in formation, flying circles over the capital. I think the last time I saw, only a lone gripen, over our skies, was more than a year ago. Where are the others? Has the last one also died now? Our defense force really has become a sad state, thanks to gross mismanagement and neglect at the highest levels.

I'd rather our government make sure that school kids from very poor households get breakfast and lunch served to them than have pilots rip around the sky in Gripens. I think a country with healthy and productive future citizens is more important than having larny military hardware.

I am a teacher at Ladysmith High School and my nickname is Blokkies Joubert ( from the David Kramer song Hak hom Blokkies). My name is Verner van Schalkwyk and i am proud of our pilots in the airforce who often have to work under difficult conditions.

In the hands of the ANC Army this chopper means nothing. 88 % of the ANC Air Force are useless...The very sad decline of the military under the ANC.

My father was an aeronautical engineer specialising in the design, development and testing of landing gear and the Lightening was the first military aircraft he was involved with and it is still my all time favourite fighter plane.

While the Lightning IS amazing. The Americans had fighters equally fast, and could fly as high and did service in multiple countries and in war at about the same time frame.

In 2011 we had 4 flying with another 10 undergoing a “ build to operate” phase, with the remaining 10 to be in over the next few years to bring two full squadrons (12 jets each) into existence. In 2023, we only have 2 available for flight. Go figure……
