I have the same model jacket in a similar condition from a Japanese seller on eBay, is the saddle soap step completely necessary? I'm sure that it helps but if I just wanted to dive straight in with some leather conditioner or mink oil would it be fine?
@EnemyStep21 күн бұрын
If the leather is dirty, you'll have a layer of grime on the surface as well as in the pores. Clean first and moisturize afterwards to ensure it's properly hydrated, not to mention removing anything which could cause further damage if rubbed or pressed into it. Leather is still skin, so treat it as such. Thank you for your time and best of luck 🙏🏻

id say renapur balsam isnt the best for sheepskin. its easy to oversaturate the skin (which is more like suede than leather) because of how thick and wax like it is and weaken it causing it to tear easily. mink oil very sparingly is best bet
@heyixiao4516Ай бұрын
Thank you so much for the video! I just bought the b3 jacket from ebay and was worring about how to recover it. For leather conditioner, is it ok to use Red Wing All Natural Leather Conditioner for first and second coating or it is better to use Renapur Leather Balsam for the first coating like you did in the video?
@EnemyStepАй бұрын
I'd go with the all natural conditioner for both coats. I used the balsam simply because I had it, and as the all natural has a softer consistency out of the tin it's easier to apply. Glad to have helped, and thank you for your time. Best of luck and enjoy the jacket 🙏🏻

@EnemyStepАй бұрын
If it's dry it sounds like it needs conditioning, but be careful around any cracks or splits. Be gentle when it comes to both cleaning and conditioning. The Perfecto 118 is currently made with 35oz hide so I assume the vintage is made from a similar thickness of leather, so it should be able to handle a good clean, but baby it the first time round. Best of luck, and thank you for your time!

You'll be able to source saddle soap from plenty of outlets, online or brick and mortar. Aim for one with the fewest ingredients and/or the most natural. The same goes for leather oils, although that's a preference of mind. If it ain't natural, I don't want it touching my leather. Best of luck 👍🏻

The smell was lessened, but not removed entirely. I'd advise another rinse if you have the patience, and/or airing outside in warm weather. Be wary of leaving in sunlight too long before oiling as you'll dry the leather out. Thank you and good luck 🙏🏻

@EnemyStep3 ай бұрын
A minimal application of WD-40 does the trick. Apply it to a toothbrush head, or a rag first, then use that to get it onto the zipper and the teeth nearby. WD-40 can and will stain, but keep it to the zipper and she'll fly!

@@EnemyStep thank you kindly! Gotta say I never thought Leon’s jacket was a real model with quite a history, not to mention how high quality and expensive it is. I basically imitated what you did except I got a jacket that was much cheaper because it had more damage and passed the saving onto the restoration. I brushed it with a suede wash before using Howard’s leather salve and mink oil. I’m just waiting for a bottle of eucalan wool wash to finish the process and then I’ll have a top notch vintage coat that’ll last a lifetime and make me look cool thanks to you!

Surprising how much darker it got, I much prefer the tone of the unconditioned leather on this cut of B3. Is there a way to condition this jacket while maintaining most of the pre-conditioned colour?
@EnemyStep5 ай бұрын
The pre-conditioned jacket was quite dry, so any level of conditioning in these circumstances would darken it to some extent. Your best bet would be an all natural leather conditioning cream, rather than an oil. Apply it lightly to effected areas (or whole jacket if required) and assess and apply more if needed. The cream won't last as long as an oil, but if you want to maintain a lighter finish it simply comes at the cost of applying lighter conditioners more often.

My current girlfriend happens to be a big fan of Leon Kennedy (hasn't even played an RE game haha) and when I first showed her I had the jacket she went crazy. I also happen to already have a passing resemblence to Leon so I've always felt cool wearing it in general. It has also (more importantly) been there for me during the bitter british winters. Anyway, point is this is all thanks to you making the video a year ago now and I really appreciate that! I hope life has been treating you well since :)

how often do you think this type of maintenance should be done do this type of jacket?
@EnemyStep5 ай бұрын
I'd say play it by ear. When it comes to leather it wears down with use, so keep an eye on it and when it dries hydrate as needed. You don't need much conditioner, so apply it in small amounts and only use what's needed. The more often you're willing to maintain it, the longer it will last and retain its condition.
@LifeOfRy7 ай бұрын
Hey, I have a question: Would you recommend using BOTH the Renapur Balsam _and_ the Redwing for the conditioning? Or two coats of either of these products? I saw how the Redwing darkened the jacket, however it did also look darkened after using the Renapur. Is that just because the jacket was still a bit damp from the initial coating? Thank you.
@EnemyStep7 ай бұрын
Looking back I would go with the red wing natural conditioner. Any balms with wax are quite heavy, and don't saturate the leather as well. On a newer jacket a wax is more effective, but given how old the Schott is I'd rather get it oiled to prevent further damage from dehydration. The fatty oils will darken leather more than lighter oils, with Mink being one of the heavier ones. Just avoid anything with silicone or synthetic ingredients if you wish to follow my advice. Best of luck with the jacket!
@LifeOfRy7 ай бұрын
@@EnemyStep doesn’t the Red Wing have silicone in it though?

@@LifeOfRy Not the "All Natural Conditioner" that I used. They do sell a "Mink Oil" tin, but that contains silicone. If you look for any leather oils which are specifically "All Natural" you're good.

Hi, I was thinking of doing this restoration process with one of my grandpa's jackets, since it is his birthday in a couple of months. The jacket is fairly dry, but my biggest concern is the wool, which is tremendously aged and yellowed. Are there any tips for restoring it to make it softer and whiter? I know about the no rinse wash, but I'm unsure of it's strength. Thank you in advance, great video!
@EnemyStep5 ай бұрын
Depending on the age of the wool, it may be beyond saving I'm afraid. The good news is that the jackets were designed to have the wool removed and replaced, much like the soles of Goodyear welted shoes. If you can find a good tailor who would be wiling to replace the shearling, you could really give the jacket a second life! You can give the existing wool a wash and see how you get on. If you can't get it to a satisfactory state after 2-3 rinses, I'd advise having it replaced outright. Good luck!

@EnemyStep11 ай бұрын
For thicker leathers such as the Schott, I'd opt for the mink oil / Natural Conditioner. It absorbed more evenly without clogging the pores too much. Mixtures with wax can provide greater water resistance, but you do lose the natural texture and feel of the leather itself. Go with what you can get hold of, but I'd recommend always going all natural 🙏
