nice video! Do you think one can damage the sensor by shooting the sun for a Timelapse?
@hallmountfilms Жыл бұрын
Good question! The general consensus seems to be that how larger the frame and more wide open the aputure, the higher the risk of damaging the sensor. That being said, if it doesn't hurt your eyes looking at the sun it should be safe to film it with your camera. It's also smart to have ND-filters on there to decrease the light hitting the sensor. Another way to prevent exposure of harsh and direct sunlight is to shoot whith a low sun and maybe some diffuse clouds covering the sun (like in my timelapse here). All in all there is only one real way to find your answer. Contact the manufacturer of your camera and ask them the same question. After all, they made the product, so they'll also be the most expert on the issue. Good luck!

@@hallmountfilms Thanks for your quick response! I actually just shot a 2 min timelapse and the sun moved into the frame. Previously it was covered by clouds. So the sun was in frame for a minute or so (shot with 24mm at f4 with 3-4 stop ND on). My FX3 works just as it’s supposed to and shows no signs of damage but I’m still kind of worried… do you think my sensor could’ve gotten damaged?
@hallmountfilms Жыл бұрын
@@eliasgottschlich I wouldn't know, but i don't think so. I shot this timelapse at f1.2 and the sensor seems to be fine. But i would contact Sony with your worries. But i'd imagine your sensor is fine :)
@eliasgottschlich Жыл бұрын
@@hallmountfilms Hey, just a quick follow up: today I talked with a Sony rep and asked him about my concerns. He said that the sensor can’t be damaged under those conditions. So this is pretty reassuring. Furthermore it came to my mind that Sony (actually all manufacturers) include an overheating protection in their cameras. So if I’m shooting a video and the sun moves in frame and the would get hot it’ll eventually just shut down to protect the internals. So I guess the real threat are lasers ;-) Still got me thinking why so many people claim that shooting the sun will result in sensor damage..
@hallmountfilms Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the follow up! What kind of camera’s got damaged this way? Maybe it’s an construction error with certain models?
