William knows Layne was truly a one of a kind. So he does not try to imitate Layne. Yes, he does sound similar to Layne but he brings his own version of what is a truly iconic grunge anthem

As a hardcore AIC fan. I have to say this was pretty good. Sure. It’s not Layne. But I don’t think there will ever be anyone to match him vocally. A good vocal cover with his own twist on it.

It's called a Talkbox, it's used in conjunction with the guitar, but it's very common to use with keyboards and synthesizers as well. Three very popular examples of songs that effectively use it are Bon Jovi's Livin' On A Prayer, Alice In Chains' Man In The Box (as seen here lol) and Slash's extended solo during Guns N' Roses' live performances of Rocket Queen.

I just perused a lot of these comments. Here's my take: it's not disrespect to Duvall; it's just an exercise in futility. Layne was just irreplaceable. It would be like The Doors without Jim Morrison. Some singers are just too instrumental to the sound & soul of the band. ACDC is one of the few to pull off a replacement singer, but mainly because it was so early in their career. A lot of younger ACDC fans probably don't even know who Bon Scot was.

Very few vocalists can cover the vocal for "Man In A Box" but William Duvall smoked it, he's a great singer and I'm glad that we can still hear those great Alice In Chains tunes.

Seems he carries the deeper notes pretty well as did Layne. But those higher, raspier notes that Layne was capable of, seems to be almost impossible to replicate. William is still amazing though. Just hard to replace a legend I guess.
