Congratulations to the model, brunette. In the video you said that the 35-100 F2.8 is a "pro" perspective but to see the shots the bokeh in the background is really ugly was almost ugly the background at 100mm and at full opening, that is 2.8 the quality of each lens does not It is excellent. In full frame with an 85mm would have had the subject completely detached from the bottom. But this I believe is a generic problem of the MFT system that multiplying the focal tree for 2 (the 100mm on the Panasonic corresponds to a 200mm) also reduces X2 the possibility of using the diaphragms. In fact, the usable diaphragms are from F4.0 to F8.0 Then the diffraction increases and for all uses I find it limiting for many photographic genres.

I found a (relatively) good deal on a GM5 recently and immediately thought I should have gotten this one instead. No charging port on the GM5, fixed screen. Viewfinder is there, but very poor. Trading in the nicer controls for a point-and-shoot with a tilt screen for half the price sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Last year I did the same analysis you present here and purchased a GF9, the Japanese-only version of the GX800. I do enjoy this camera, and its small size, weight, and the 4k video (with a crop). This camera is definitely an overlooked gem. Also, your featuring this camera in many of your videos helped me learn and value it even more. I agree that the manual controls aren't great, but I found there are shortcut ways to choose common settings fast, on the touch screen, without going into the main menu. I greatly prefer the manual controls of the OM-5 or E-P7, especially in changing conditions where photos also must be shot quickly. But using those shortcuts on the GF9 touch screen slow me down much less than I expected. And with the preset focus and zone system focusing, the camera can grab good instant photos in automatic or semi-automatic modes, such as aperture priority with a preset auto iso range. Also, to me the 16 Mpx sensor renders a lovely organic look.

I have one with a 20mm f1.7 permanently attached, despite having endless cameras from A7RV , Fuji X100V, A7C ii, RX100 etc this camera with lens is my favourite travel camera. It says everything about where Panasonic went wrong. I would buy a phase detect modern sensor with 4k , no crop , tomorrow. Panasonic seen to have forgotten why they created micro four thirds and buyers seem to have forgotten Panasonic cameras as a result.

How do you like this for low light shooting? Is f2.8 sufficient in dark night shots or dim lighting?

I have the GX800 as my EDC camera. I just put it in my pocket when I go out. The GM1/GM5 are cameras that have been very hyped by content creators, that's why people talk about them. In my country, buying a second hand one (GM1) is double price of the GX800, crazy. Maybe I would get the GM5 because of the viewfinder, but as it is just my fun camera I don't need it.

I agree with everything you said, Gary. I picked up a used GX850 the other year, even though I already had the GX7 an GX85. It really is tiny and lightweight and the pictures are as good as all the other GX cameras. Panasonic even saw fit to remove the anti-alias filter, likes the GX85, for that tiny bit of extra sharpness. My only quibble is that the screen is impossible to see outdoors on a bright day, especially when you're wearing sunglasses--and you're at that age when it's hard to see up close. 😄But then that applies to all digital cameras.

Its a great bit of kit. You can find on ebay a stick on rubber accessory grip out of China, which gives your fingers something to hook onto. I use mine mostly as a back up to the OM-5 if I'm travelling, but also often just as an edc pocket camera. Mostly shooting it with the 7Artisans 18mm 6.3 cap lens in silent shutter mode. Great for those spontaneous moments where you just want to do a quick grab shot, it boots up really quick and with the fixed focus and silent shutter, it can be done in a second or two. Also good with the 12-32, its natural kit lens I would say, adding stabilisation for video.

Yes! everyone loves the GM1, but I think peole who don't have it are more excited about it than people who do, and have actually used it. I had the GM1, GX880 and GM5 at the same time, and I think the GX8xxx is the better camera between the GM1 and GX8xx. The GM1 is smaller, but to the point it's kind of a negative. I dare call it almost "too small". The GX880 was much nicer to actually use, still very small, has a flip screen, better screen, DFD autofocus, 4k video and more. The only negative it has against the GM1 is the micro SD. In every other way I think the GX8xx cameras are better. I kept the GM5, but really only for the viewfinder.

i have added a Sony AG-R2 grip to my 800. It completly transforms the way the camera handles and I prefer the 800 with the Sony grip over the 880 with its integrated grip. Still, I run with the GM5 over the 800 series and the GM1 any day of the week, due to the viewfinder, even if it is small and tunnely. But then again, that is a somewhat spoilt choice.

@@JensMHA Yes, I picked up that grip from Amazon and it works really well! It's designed for the Sony RX100, so it's actually a better fit for the GM1, but it really helps improve the grip on my GX850. I tried in vain to look for the FlipBac grips, but I couldn't find anyone still selling them.

I highly recommend that you get a 2nd hand E-M1. It's insanely cheap for a flagship of the past. Often you can get it for around US$250.
@gregfeeler69105 күн бұрын
With all respect, you really need to do some research into Olympus and OM System cameras newer than your E-PL6 which is 12 years old. The PEN "L" cameras, as you likely know, are the "Light" versions intended for casual shooters and will naturally lack some of the controls and features advanced photographers want. The non-L series (i.e. E-P5 or E-P7) are much more fully featured. And the OM-D and now OM SLR-style bodies are vastly more advanced than any 2013 PEN "L" camera. Year for year, I think that comparable Lumix bodies will have more very advanced video features - if one needs them - but the newer OM-series cameras have much better video capabilities than ever before, and for many people have all they need. As for rangefinder cameras, I have no idea why an OM System PEN E-P7 is over US $2,000 in your market. I'm in the US and bought one brand new from a Japanese seller through eBay about nine months ago for US $750.00.

Silent shutter is nothing new to Olympus. Even my old em-5 ii has it. Newer Olympus or OM cameras has different frames rates too but I don’t think has as much as codec as Panasonic. However I think sometimes it is the IBIS compatibility or the different zoom ring direction hinders people to jump ship. 😂

The OM-1 Mk.2 will shoot movie at 24, 25, 30, 50, and 60fps but does not have pages and pages of video formats like the G9. Between the two makes, if you want video, it's still Lumix. You mentioned the E-PL6, this was like a stop-gap camera quickly followed by the improved E-PL7 which is still my carry. This was the period that saw a big leap in sensor quality that gave us the E-PL7, E-M5ii, PEN-F, G7, GH4, and the first Lumix with IBIS, the GX7. I have often found that Olympus have better haptics than Lumix, they can feel better in the hand and more intuitive to use. No, they don't do the same things, they don't even do the same thing the same way. The OM-1 Mk.2 does not have the plethora of buttons of the G9 but still has everything there. I was underwhelmed by the "even more video" of the G9M2 where I want a stills camera.

I am currently using an EM10/i while travelling, bought for $AU150 (body) while the GX8 is being serviced. It does take beautiful photos, and the difference between 16 and 20 MP is trivial. Had the EM10 been around when I bought my Sony A55, it would have been the better choice for me, as I wasn't taking videos at all, and was doing general, mainly travel photography, so very little low light or seeking bokeh. Compared to the Lumix cameras, particularly my much newer GX8, while it is small and very easy to carry, it does certainly lag behind. I prefer not to have cameras with poking out bits (EVF) that can snag a pocket. Like you, I also love electronic shutter, which this doesn't have. It is really noisy! I like to be able to sit my camera on a table while I eat, and grab shots of what is happening around me, but the clunk of the shutter tends to undermine that. I would describe the OM as a great second camera for my usage.
@Emerald_City_9 күн бұрын
You are contradicting yourself. You practically have no experience with (newer?) Olympus, how can you know then what the difference is? Also if you need silence during the sermon, you won't be using flash in the church, would you? If the price is the reason, don't be afraid to say that. For me, and I was already much older than you, that was the reason I started and remained with Lumix. Your English is excellent, I enjoyed it! Take care about the content, try condensing the script, sharpen up the points, and you'll fly! Love to Indonesia :)

Agreed about the video being better on Panasonic. The thing you would pick up from Oly/OMS nowadays would be good C-AF for video and moving subjects for stills. It’s a big up from G/GX85/GX850 AF. But you’re totally right, not worth such a big cost premium. At those prices, you’re probably in G9 mk2 territory.

Hi Gary, i definitly also prefer rangefinder, however switched to Olympus EM1 mk2 because of some features. There is on the Olympus a "anti shock" mode which is a mix of first electronic shutter and 2nd shutter mechanical, but allows flash operation, I think this is cool and almost silent. I miss sometimes the Lumix GX8, no danger of "nose-focus errors", and touchscreen seemed more responsive to my finger to set the focus point while using the EVF.
