What helped me the most with raising my children was the book ‘Raising Warriors: Preparing Your Children For a Godly Life’. It is honestly a game changer

I used this with my oldest for levels 2-5. It helped fill lots of gaps he had from public school and moving a couple of times. I really liked the emphasis it puts on mental math strategies! Something I never learned in school and math was so hard for me. I myself have gotten better at math because of teaching it to my children. I highly recommend.

It doesn’t sound like it from what you said here, but did the bullying incident your son experienced at all discourage him from wanting to be in a school setting?

No, he mentioned it fairly calmly with a reasonable perspective on their unfamiliarity with ADHD. That being said, my blood boiled a wee bit. Luckily, his group of good friends make up for the few sour experiences.

Im watching this video with tears in my eyes because after 5 years of homeschooling I think this MIGHT be our last. I being pulled to try out next year as a trail run and see how my oldest adjusts to it. He isn’t asking for it but I’m conflicted because I think he NEEDS it and I’m not giving him what he needs. Idk it’s been a rough time lately because even though we love homeschooling I think he will benefit from the school setting.

I have three kids, and two of them did public school for three years (k-2, 1-3). My kids have asd and/or adhd and they weren't thriving. According to them school was too stressful, and their behavior communicated that to me as well. It wasn't the academics that were hard on them, but I think the intensity of the social environment, the rigidity of the environment, and the sensory elements. I appreciate what you said about different people having different social needs. It's so true. They are currently happy to be homeschooling, but they do miss some elements of school like certain friends or the fun little parties... the constant influx of birthday cupcakes. 😂 I think it is good for them (and me) to see the decision to homeschool with clear eyes. There are some drawbacks, but overall I think it was a positive change for all of us.

I'm hoping my oldest will be able to take a few classes at the high school next year - not a full load, just 2 or 3 classes. To prep for that we are making sure to get his IEP in place this year. We talked with the school system and February is generally a slow month for them for testing, so that's when we are having it done. That also gives everyone time to have it IN PLACE when school starts. I'm not 100% sure, but am fairly confident that the testing should then be valid through the entirety of High School. So, even if we don't end up doing classes next year, it will be ready when we are ready. I share all this just to say if anyone has a child who might need and IEP or 504, it might be helpful to get that in place early so they can START OUT with accommodations, rather than having to wait to get through the whole testing process.

I've been waiting for this video! Thanks for sharing your experience. We've been homeschooling from 2nd-5th grade and are considering trying private school for sometime in middle school. I know that can be a tough time with hormones and all the changes that are going on during those ages and think it's valuable for the child to feel confident in themselves before being thrown into that atmosphere. I'm looking forward to following along with your experiences in both homeschool and brick and mortar.

Hi! I know this is an old video but I’m wondering if a writing program, like WriteShop, would be too much in addition to this? It is solely based on creative writing and research paper writing I believe. Or do you think the student gets enough of an introduction to that with Lightening Lit 3? Thanks!

I think it depends more on your child’s affinity for math than their ADHD. That being said, I’ve heard great things about RightStart Math if you’re ok with lots of parental involvement (very game based). We used a combination of resources, but our faves were Math Mammoth, Singapore Word Problems, and Mathematical Reasoning (Critical Thinking Co).

Aw, mama, hugs. We have all been where you are now. The more we regulate ourselves and look for the good, the easier it all becomes. We enrolled my son in taekwondo when he was in kindergarten, and he is a second degree black belt now. I recommend looking into sports/activities that encourage crossbody motion and mental focus, like martial arts or musical instruments.

It is designed so that you could buy the grade level set for the entire year, and that set covers several scientific topics in accordance with educational standards. If you are fond of unit studies, Science Unlocked makes it super easy to craft a year of them. Personally, we have other plans already in motion, but I think the content I have seen is robust.

Hi, my friend! I don’t think it would work well as a supplement during the school year because the lessons are pretty thorough and definitely not short. I would consider it as a way to prevent summer slide for families that take summers off. 😊

Hey! We have been using Teaching Textbooks for a whole year now and I absolutely love it. I do however keep hearing that is is not a strong program for the higher grades (middle and high school) as a highly educated woman, what do you think about that? Do u think it will prepare kids for college level math?
@ProjectHappyHome
@ProjectHappyHome 2 ай бұрын
I have heard this as well, and as someone who loved math and did a lot of higher level science/math, I understand your concerns. I think the TT program is very standards-based and on par with grade level expectations, but if your kid wants to get a math-based degree in the future, I might advise supplementing with problem-solving curricula as well. Otherwise, I think it keeps kids on track for math understanding and practical application. In terms of the math you would need for high school sciences, I think TT is perfectly fine.

I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings. I'm confused when it comes how you talked about history in the USA. Slavery was worldwide. In the USA 23℅ of free whites owned slave and 28℅ of free blacks owned slaves and higher percentages of native American tribes owned slaves. In fact in 2024 India has the most enslaved people on earth. Indians who look African (untouchables) are forced to stay in the forest, naked. As bus loads of fellow Indians take pictures of them. Like their in a Zoo.

1 point I'd disagree with or rather which could be aided by more contextualisation is the part about asking or reminding about the meds. Yes ofc it depends on who and how and why you ask but it can also be a support since forgetting to take them is a very real problem for many and if done in a supportive way can help a lot. Granted, I have less experience with childhood adhd and more with adults but the number of people who have pointed out their partners reminders as a positive impact is huge.
