Life is never a straight line. That is the beauty of it. We live, we experience duality, we overcome it, and we expand our consciousness. Your podcasts were always very insightful. Happy to hear from you again. Thank you brother! May God always bless you and illuminate your path. ❤🙏

It has been a long time since you posted, sir Every one has Buddha Nature inside, and no such thing as bad person. Stupid, stubborn, unaware, carried away-yes. People with little conviction and experience, emotional, attached to desires, go tell them’. So glad I decided not to conform. Purpose of Zen is to challenge Pali and Tibetan institutions, not to disregard them… Enjoy your Shamanic Journey.

Thank you for sharing that :) Interesting that you're working with Pam, a very small world moment. She may not remember me, but I spent some time on her property, and my wife and I actually lived there for a year after we got married. She wasn't living there anymore, but her former partner rented a cabin to us. It was a beautiful year.

HI Eshu, i just saw this vid, it didnt show up in my feed for some reason. So a couple questions I have: 1. Often after an opening during sitting, there is a tendency to grasp at the experience, almost forgetting that what allowed the opening to arise was a direct attending to experience. However, during a psychedelic journey, there is a degree of openness that is almost explosive. The moment discursiveness arises, it melts like a "snowflake over a raging fire". However, this state can feel so ideal, that there is an almost subconscious tendency to "try and get back there" which ultimately causes that release to come back with a vengeance. I have referred to it as "egoic recoil". Integration without grasping is quite difficult, and I was wondering if you had any pointers or insights around this? 2. It has been said below, but reconciling the precept regarding intoxicants with psychedelic medicines. I personally don't see these medicines as intoxicants, as it does the opposite of clouding the mind, but it can cause confusion post experience that may be overall detrimental to a persons practice. I fell victim to grasping at idealism in the past and it really messed me up for a long time. I hope these make sense, I am happy to clarify.

Sensei Eshu Martin. Not long ago, I contacted you, paying my respects for your work in your Sangha in Canada. I am coordinator of a Lay Sangha in the city of La Paz, in Baja California Sur, Mexico. You even told me that you hoped one day to be able to visit us. That is why when you decided to close your sangha, for the reasons you gave, we felt very sad, because believe it or not, it was very useful to those of us who are on our way without Buddhist institutions and clergy. We always saw you as a neat, friendly person, accessible to people, you have been a source of inspiration for many, and also for me. I know in advance that being in charge of a sangha, and especially Zen, requires a lot of work, sacrifice and effort, in addition to complying with the standards of the institutions, which many times, far from helping us, overwhelms us, and is a ballast practice. I have experienced it several times, but here we are still standing, the advantage is that we do not pay rent, since it is our own place, but perhaps, if it were not so, it would have been very difficult to keep Zendo La Paz standing. We would love to see him again like a few years ago, with a shaved head, and helping to spread the 3 jewels, but now with the wisdom of the years. It's worth it. Zen must in a way that we enjoy existence every day, the practice of paramitas and Annica are infallible, in addition to Zazen as a method towards Daigo. Please consider returning to Practice Zen, we know you have much to contribute. Perhaps you do not realize the importance of your support with people around the world thanks to the internet. Hands on Deep gassho.! this is our facebook.com/zendolapaz , we are also in instagram.

Hello. I'm most definitely interested! Question One: Doesn't the use of psychedelics conflict with, "Refrain from intoxicants that cloud the mind"? Question Two: How would the use of psychedelics in practice interact with mental illness? I imagine it may depend on the mental illness, but say, illusions of grandeur. Couldn't psychedelics present information that may be interpreted unwisely and reinforce those illusions? Of course, I'm sure there are still unperceived illusions without mental illness. Question Three: Sorry for the extra question. What about the legality of psychedelics?

Gassho Eshu, nice to see your face in my youtube feed again :) You know my past, however its hard for me to dismiss the experiences I have had during my psychedelic ceremonies. I cant remember if it was before or after I met you, but I ended up in Peru for a few months living with a curandero in the jungle, drinking plant medicine 3 times a week and learning how to make the brews and run ceremony. It completely changed my life. Im now married and living in Calgary with my beautiful wife. Im teaching guitar full time again, which is the only work I can ever see myself doing short of studio and stage work. Integrating my Zen practice with the profound lessons learned during ceremony has always been a difficult process, Id be very curious (and I'm sure many others would be too) to hear from your perspective how they inform each other. I have a tremendous amount of respect for you, you came along at a very tumultuous phase of my life, and even though it was brief, it was significant, and I will never forget that. 🙏

Great to hear from you Aaron! Glad to hear about your journey along the path. I really appreciate your kind words, and I think this is a great idea to talk about. My present view is that awareness of the mind and cosmos is a vast and multidimensional panorama, and as humans there are many lenses available to us to take in, and be immersed in the wholeness of it in different ways, and by experiencing different ways, we can get a more spherical perspective. Personally I view medicine work as "advanced practice", and I've found it very helpful to support people in cultivating resources and capacity in "non-ordinary" states through meditation, trancework, and journeywork before bringing medicine into the mix. Without some good resources and skills, stepping into medicine can be like being dropped into the middle of the wilderness without any resources or skills - you'll probably survive, but it may be overwhelming and unpleasant, and you're likely to miss a lot of opportunities to learn and grow because you are so preoccupied with "getting through the ordeal". Working with medicine, for me opens up vistas that can then be explored more thoroughly and intentionally through non-medicine practices, allowing the teachings and principles - I might even say Dharma - revealed in medicine to be integrated in a powerful way. I'll make some notes and perhaps this is a great topic for a video all of it's own!

@@EshuMartin Also, I went back to school and got my degree in contemporary music performance. For my final performance (which i had to do in my basement for a couple friends due to covid unfortunately) , i wrote a show based around my experiences in ceremony. It captures the ebb and flow of the experience, and I would be honoured if you would check it out! (though don't at all feel obligated, its 40 mins long). It was honestly the hardest I've ever worked on anything in my life, but I ended up graduating with first class honours. its on my channel if you're interested :)

I enjoyed much of this talk. Living seriously is important. A person can take life too seriously though. Alan Watts Zen teachings were almost never without humor. There is a correlation between things that are funny and things that are true. A poem about the appearance of the human skull and how it seems to be smiling. “Chattering finch and water fly are not merrier than I. Here among the flowers I lie, laughing everlastingly. No I may not tell the best, surely friends I might’ve guessed, death was but the good King’s jest. It was hid so carefully. “

Thank you, Eshu. This is exactly what I needed now. Years ago, I taught myself to meditate just to experience God. I experienced miracles that I could not bear. I had what I came to find out later was a kundalini awakening. I experienced so much love I felt unworthy. Oddly, I began to avoid meditation. Learning to "let it all dissolve" anew sounds marvelous.
