I wonder why Sparta didn't have its own money? Logically, they should have walked there. Do you rule out the possibility that these were the varieties that went to Sparta?

Is it possible this was minted in Sybaris recording the establishment of new colonies (or defeat of native peoples, similar to the Kroton-Sybaris alliance coinage of Sybaris II after 510)? Are there any fractions associated with it that would point to local trade?

Well presented. I appreciate the admission that what we know and what we think we know are not always in perfect accordance. History as a whole is never as much the study of what happened as it is what people believed to have happened. We suffer from the tendency to believe as fact what is a prevailing theory only to have it followed by another generation of experts intent on showing the errors of the former group while proposing new theories that their followers will accept as fact and provide fodder for future revisions. This situation seems hard to admire but it is what we have. I do not see how it can change other than for more people to understand that it is a process rather than an absolute truth.

Yes I agree! What is really the truth:-)?

I found a coin in the backyard the other day, going on its condition, I thought it would be 50-100 years old. It was from 2016. The Alkaline soil has eaten it so quickly. Almost no relief visible. The materials the Ancients used, the quality, is amazing and wont be seen again.
