Wait...isn't competencies basically another word for standards? And the strategies for students to become competent are the outcomes or objectives? So is CBE not the same as SBC ( Standards Based Curriculum ) and OBE ( Outcomes Based Education)?

Modern industry is only one of the products of classical and traditional education. Today's civilization did not come from the new "educational" system and is certainly not the product of social dogmas like "multiple intelligences", "emotional intelligence", "transgenderism", "feminism", etc. I can almost imagine a self-taught civil engineer trying to make a bridge, a building or a dam stand, out of pure creativity and having "discovered how to do it on his own" ha ha ha ha... That'll be the day.

I can almost imagine a mechanical, electrical, aeronautical or materials engineer having become so out of choosing what to study and what not during their university years... -"Dude! You didn't insulate the Columbia Space Shuttle properly!!" "Look man, back in my university years I chose not to study thermodynamics or transport phenomena. That's why I am an aeronautical engineer with a major in transgender studies and emotional intelligence"... HA HA HA HA...

Students have some choice and agency in how they demonstrate their learning???? I was blown away by the affirmation that nobody really has the rule on what CBE is. As a professional educator I consider there are some subjects which cannot follow a CBE approach, and other where you must really think what is you want your students to learn, because under the CBE strategy the quantity of the content is less than thatyou can achieve in the traditional method. Sts will learn it, for sure, but you must be aware they will only master specific areas of your subject. Hence, Finland allows students to actually create the year's content and plans. Thank you for this post.

2:18 This is why the majority of people suck at math, classes keep on moving forward on more advance concepts when some students haven't have time to master the fundementals.

It is a disservice to dismiss learning loss. There is content loss and there is also loss in student skills. As a university math prof, back to in person, there is a profound difference in student knowledge in terms of "learned" requisite content. To pretend that the majority of students are successful self-learners, is delusional. Some of them are good self-learners, most of them cheated on every quiz and exam. Midway through the term, I overheard a few of my students talk about how much more they were learning in-person, and this was with me already throwing out a lot of content and trying to ease back in. I appreciate the conversations and goals of your podcast, and learn from each. Off to listen to the rest of the recording now.... just want to add how much harder I think k-12 teaching is compared to my job.

Thank you so much for sharing such an informative session. The problems and issues discussed in the session appear to be also experienced in other countries but only in the U.S.. Thus, it was a really helpful time for me to learn tips of designing and conducting online classes during the COVID19 pandemic.
