I was wondering why so many large groups of bicycles were coming from the top and I think I figured it out. Up the road there is a University with a University Hospital and at the bottom left there is the University's library and an Erasmus building. On the right there are some sports facilities (of the university I guess). Also, way up the road, at one of the main entrances of the campus, there is a junction with traffic lights for cars and bicycles that groups them up. Overall, it now makes sense for all those groups of bicycles moving in one direction (top to bottom).

Great example of terrible design that hasn't been thought through properly. Potentially large wait times increases risks that cyclists will be hurt. This needs traffic lights to kick in when bottlenecks aren't clearing.

As a driver in the UK I think we are not used to stopping on a roundabout. Once we get onto the roundabout we are thinking about a quick exit to leave space for others. Driving gently and actually being prepared to stop before exiting is going to take a whole new mindset (/generation!).
@lws7394
@lws7394 Жыл бұрын
How is that possible ? You would have to stop for a pedestrian crossing, right ? That means drivers would have to give priority to others anyway.
@weebolddavy

These may work well in the Netherlands because most motorists there are also cyclists and most cyclists are also motorists, but with the hugely congested roads we have here in most of the UK and the poor standards of driving by many, a drink or drugs driver will do more damage than the most determined terrorist ever could. Also I never noticed a single cyclist wearing hi-viz clothing and the majority didn't seem to be wearing helmets. Talking of congestion, the orange coloured van approached the roundabout at 1:30 and didn't manage to exit it until 2:56. How long did he queue just to reach the roundabout?

sorry but this concept is garbage! it blocks the traffic, its almost as useless as a traffic light! the point of a roundabout is to have only one side of traffic to care off. bicycles should also drive on the road, but have a like 1meter wide area on the side of the street, and also if cyclers want to go left they should drive around the whole circle like a car would.

I found this video after someone tweeted it as an example to an article about redesigning our city center traffic, just sharing my thoughts after having watched it a couple of times, from the comments I read, many people seem to love this roundabout, however, my impression is that pedestrians don't look all that safe, something is constantly blocking something else and the constant flow of bikes seems to cause road traffic congestion, seems great if you're a bike user and don't like vehicles. I've never used one of these complex roundabouts, so maybe the experience on the ground is completely different from how I perceive it here.
@stijnhs
@stijnhs Жыл бұрын
As a Dutch person I'll give you an explanation as to how these roundabouts work. First point to mention is that these roundabouts are located within cities/towns which have a maximum speed of 50km/h (≈31mph) which means traffic isn't very fast moving to begin with. Generally speaking the pedestrian crossing and bike lanes are slightly raised so besides being infrastructure dedicated to pedestrians and biked it doubles as a speed bump for the car traffic approaching the roundabout which makes that cars generally approach the roundabout at around 30km/h (≈18mph) which is slow enough for the car driver to access the situation for road users it has to yield to, this makes Dutch roundabouts very safe for pedestrians and cyclists. As for the blocking part you mentioned, roundabouts like this have natural flow with priority for cyclists and pedestrians (cyclists because they "carry" more people per unit of space than cars and pedestrians because they are vulnerable). Even though it may seem that sometimes a few cars are blocked relatively less people are blocked and the cars can continue the second the "blockage" has gone past. You might think intersections don't have these blockages but there traffic lights form artificial blockages which may even halt you even though there's no other interfering traffic (in the Netherlands this is still not really an issue as almost all traffic lights work with multiple sensors in the road which can read the situation on the road and prioritize the lanes with the most cars). Still, if the roads are busy roundabouts can carry way more people while simultaneously being safer than intersections.

Sorry, but there is nothing complicated about that roundabout at all. You just need to pay attention the moment you enter it. And know what the rules of the road are. Most nations do not have yield triangle to indicate how traffic is supposed to flow. That alone makes it, for the average viewer, difficult to understand.

This seems like a horrible design. Besides the obvious danger to the cyclists, it clearly won't be able to handle much traffic as there's nothing stopping the cyclists from continually moving through the intersection. The size of the roundabout can only handle half a dozen cars max. So I guess as long as it never gets busy, it can sort of function, but as soon as there is any kind of congestion, they're in trouble. This is a situation where a traditional intersection with a light would be safer and more efficient. It would allow the cyclists and the cars to take their turns moving through the intersection without risk.
@stijnhs
@stijnhs Жыл бұрын
You think it's a horrible design because you don't see it from the Dutch perspective... Cycling is a huge part of our culture (there are more bicycles than people in the Netherlands) and it's the primary mode of transport. Therefore prioritizing cyclists and cycling infrastructure makes that more people cycle which means less cars which means less cars to clog up roads. It seems counter intuitive but prioritizing cycling infrastructure makes for a better car driving experience as there are so little cars on the road that for the most part you're never stuck in traffic jams. It might only be able to "handle half a dozen cars" but it can handle more PEOPLE than a three lane intersection with the artificial barrier of traffic lights plus it costs less to build and maintain than an intersection as well.
