Priceless video! This gives real insight to tenor players about Webster's saxophone technique and approach to music. Thank you!

Wow, the cross cultural connection has been set by the time this boat "arrives" in old Batavia, we see two individuals standing intimately close to each other whom I believe are a Dutch-Indonesian couple, arriving with the boat at 0:52 The lady seem to know a lot of stuffs, wonder what she's explaining enthusiastically about to the gentleman by her side. Thanks for sharing this footage with us, growing up I've heard a lot of amazing stories from both sides and time-machine footages like these really drives your imagination like a movie, must be magical times. Just wanna add one old story (this were told +four decades ago): There was this one of the original '45 freedom fighter (who even after managed to live a successful life after independence still kept romanticizing countless memories from the old Dutch-Indies past) who told me, "When we were kids in my kampong one of our entertainment was to see the dutch soldiers eat. We'd all gather up and watch 'em fill their whole table with satays and beer. NO RICE could you believe it, just satays... and beer! They'd be gobbling up A MOUNTAIN FULL of satays and wash 'em down with bottles of beer! What a sight to see, wow". Years after, I met a very old ex Dutch Indies soldier in Australia who was my neighbour and when I asked about how he felt about old times in Indonesia he smiled widely, eyes wandering back to the "good old days" as he said, "I can still remember a few things....... was beautiful there I love everything, the food and... Ahhhh YES! THE SATAY VENDOR!". The way he told the story with his arms flailing about showing the positions of where things were was as if he visually got transported back in time :D (... and if their age difference was 10-15 years, wonder if those two actually ever unknowingly met)

Hello In July 1967, during the International Festival Every Year in Juli in Pori - Finland, I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Ben Webster We saw each other every day, during walks Ben always had a film camera with him. I am a guitarist, I played in the hotel where Ben lived. Maybe some movie from these meetings has survived. I will never forget these meetings. Ben then gave me the most beautiful musical compliment in my life. - January Zaradny

Love it that Ben is listening to and playing along with Fats Waller ( Baby Brown ) and James P. Johnson ( Havin' a Ball ), and plays some pretty mean stride, himself ( If Dreams Come True ). No doubt he wore out the LP, Father of the Stride Piano.

Priceless, timeless, vitally important as a great musical voice and guide to all who care about the artistry of the best. Ben always appeals widely to non jazz music lovers (as did Hodges). He seemed to have been lovably impossible and complex.

I like you don't sensationalize the poverty which is obvious - and lack of education/environmental consciousness which plague so many places of this earth. Wow, I see indigenous people in this video is only allowed to be blue-collar workers. Thats why the indigenous people fought against the invaders (the Dutch people and their descendants). Now, after Indonesia's independence, many Indonesian people who become successful entrepreneurs, student achievement and the native people have a lot to take master's or doctoral study.

After the war and getting independence Indonesia suffered a big decline. So much Sukarno had to invent outside enemies (and wage war) and made sure those dutch that were inclined to help the republic succeed were either killed or expelled. My grandparents were sent to the Indies to help educate the common people so it could be a modern nation after independence (look at the "Ideeële Politiek" and the negotiating that already started quite a few years before the war, although that for obvious reasons might not have landed in the republican history books, and anyway was interrupted by the imperialist Jap's - and Sukarno had a lot of folk killed in projects for the Jap's, one railway is infamous- ).

Well, this is precious, just precious. I myself an Indonesian, my father often told me stories about his youth back in the 30's-40's, and during the Independence War. And after watching this, i kinda get the picture of what he was always talked about. Thank you Ewald for sharing this. :))

Nowadays they have died, but a lot of older indonesian folk have very very good memories about the dutch colonial times. It was devastating for Sukarno cs that during the Independence struggle people living in the dutch held territories were much better of than people living in the republican held territories. The intellectual backbone needed to take over the country successfully had not been established beginning 40 ies. Alas we know now
@harryblack73235 жыл бұрын
@@wimkapteyn Of course, because of the Dutch EMBARGO in that period, life in the Indonesian territory was very bad. They could not get food, medicine etcetera in and out. So it was the Dutch whom we have to blame for the miserable situation at that time.
