Bruh I swear if a popper of slims caliber just made the jump to hip hop it would be open season for him. I remember Fusion Concept 2018, Slim was getting SURGICAL to nothing but hip hop tracks and was straight dogwalkin nxggas. And I know what you mean when you say you dont care for "moves" cuz the more I watch Slim, the more I understand you dont reach that level thinking in "moves". Its very much for a specific audience like you said. But thats that approach shxt I be talking about, skill set aside, play that track for almost any other dancer, we wouldn't have gotten a round like that. Speaking of that track specifically, we need more shxt like that with less bells and whistles, I really am tired of the beatkilling bait.

Slim is my favorite dancer on the planet, and his understanding of movement and music ceases to amaze me, but what he was doing was NOT hip-hop freestyle. What a LOT of high level dancers are doing now isn't hip-hop freestyle anymore. Junior Yudat, Stalamuerte, Rubix, even Evion... they're dope and they're pushing the boundaries of the dance, but in their more recent rounds, it has gotten to a point where they're no longer doing hip-hop freestyle anymore. Just like every one of these street and club dance styles, there is a foundation and a subculture that encompasses what those styles are, and it is what differentiates them from each other. Once we start forgetting about tradition and context, we start to blur these lines. We've had a category for that for a minute that was referred to as "freestyle" without any of the foundational dances attached (some refer to this as all-styles or open styles nowadays). I think it's great to have that. But once these lines are blurred after a certain point, it makes it hard to preserve the history and the culture of those individual styles so that new/future generations of dancers have a good representation of that particular style. I think it's dope to innovate, and Slim is a champion of innovation within popping and freestyle dance culture. But you're not innovating if you're not giving respect first to the foundations of the dance and the culture, and judging from this battle + from what he has said about his experience with hip-hop on his socials, he's not there yet. Even with his extensive amount of experience in the general freestyle dance scenes and in the popping scene, a new venture is a new venture. I don't think it's fair to just let people jump ahead and give them flowers before they actually put in any work, simply because they have a high status in the general scene. If we allow that, we're teaching the newer generation that props are easy to get, and that won't allow them the chance to have to experience a lot of what it means to come up in the culture.
