I love this character. The first and (I think) best psycho killer the Coens ever wrote. He's bizarre, eccentric, funny, and completely psychotic. And he has some of their best lines. "Stick your finger up the wrong person's ass?"

my favorite moment in this entire movie is 2:24 walsh's face before and after hedaya says "it's no joke." without the laughter all that's left is weary contempt and a fly crawling on his temple. perfect

a common theme in coen bros movies, established right here in their first, is for characters to have an established set of ethics (or lack thereof), especially in the killing or villain business. this makes the character feel more three dimensional than just a nice character design. every action they make is dictated by how much they are willing to adhere to their own moral judgments.
@PhoebeJCPSkunccMDsImagitorium5 жыл бұрын
walter sobchak in the big lebowski and larry gopnik in a serious man come to mind immediately. they are both kind of on the extremes of navigating a hellish biblical panic attack of a life. and both react to things going wrong (in their point of view) extremely fitting for their character

Such a fantastic scene. The whole movie is great, but this is the best part, mainly because of Walsh's ability to be so sleazy but likable at the same time. Thanks for uploading!

The first time I noticed M. Emmet Walsh was in Little Big Man in which he played a terrified stage coach driver being attacked by Native Americans. Little Big Man was a stage coach passenger who tried to take the rifle from Walsh who would not give it up and screamed "No, it's mine!" If the Coens were better know in 1984 Walsh would certainly have been nominated for an Oscar for Blood Simple. He was brilliant, a combination of sleaze, psychopath, and smiling good ole boy. Check out all his facial expressions in this scene, ranging from self-amusement, disgust, contemplative. Incredible actor.

My bad. When I play the video on Google Chrome, it plays all the way through. It's only when I play it on the version I have of Internet Explorer (ver. 11) does it cut off early. Don't know why, but I'm glad I figured it out so that I can enjoy this theme to its fullest!

Well, if it pays right and it's legal, I'll do it It's not strictly legal Well, if it pays right ... I'll do it That is the perfect line to describe the greatest Coen Brother Villain - M Emmet Walsh's PI - unlike Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men, who goes by his twisted moral code, This guy has no moral code

yeah, in a weird way Walsh plays a more evil character than Bardem, but both are truly awesome defined villain characters only Coen bros can come up with.
