I remember our parents taking us to Universal City (as it was called then) back close to when it must have opened... so long ago... :-) :The thing I remember most was the huge tile mosaic of a galaxy around the front entrance.Unfortunately,when they added the Mervyn's wing that mural was destroyed. :-(

They used to have private picnics at Wenona Beach. I sneaked in one time and entered a pie eating contest. I came in third place and won a dollar.

Thank you for this. I'm a DeFoe. My grandfather, (also) Kirke DeFoe, moved away from Michigan right before WW2. I'm not exactly sure how my family connects to DeFoe Shipbuilding, but I think it was through my great, great uncle or something. I don't know much family history, and I don't know who to ask in my family, so this is wonderful to see. My parents have an original blueprint for a DeFoe Cruisemaster that I hope to possess one day.

The first farmer talking in this video is John Dunleavy; it was so nice to hear his voice again. He was such a good person, neighbor and friend.

I loved the Universal Mall, but your comment on the Woolworth cafeteria was wrong, at least for the mid to late 80s. That Woolworth location did not have the island in the center of the store as other did, for example the one by Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. The Universal Mall store had a restaurant off to the side next to Woolworth with an entrance into the store. My family would go on Holiday shopping sprees and always have lunch at their restaurant.
@jimsteele92617 ай бұрын
That may have been a later change to the mall. I remember the recessed Woolwrth caffeteria. It was out in the mall itsel,in front of the store.

I miss this mall so much I would go there instead of going to macomb mall and this was when I was 10 - 15 years old by myself b4 I got a driver's license, so it was a long bus ride out of the way but totally worth it . My uncle owned the national coney island so when he was around we had free lunch. Movie 16 $1 Sundays were off the hook id watch 4 movies in a row for $4 less if I felt froggy enough to sneak in lol. The fun center was cooler than Kool-aid 😎 lmao. When I was 14 I dated a hair dresser from the salon when you 1st walked in, that didn't last long tho , the family was trying to put her in jail. When your 14 you don't think its a problem when your dating a 23 year old. Lol those were the days !

Hello, my name is Steve May. My great grandfather built a cabin next to the connaughtons on grand sable lake way back when your family did. We were friends with the Becker family in town and The Neely family whom also had a cabin on the lake. I miss this place so much and it was very dear to my heart being there in summer times in the 60's, 70's-80's. We are from Indianapolis, In. My parents Jim and Judy May were from Cleveland. I hope you get this message. It was an interesting video thank you.

I just discovered this video. Brought back many memories for me. I worked as an 18-year-old clerk-typist for the Navy Supervisor of Shipbuilding in the summer of 1965 and then again from 1966 to 1968. I then went to Washington, DC and worked for the Naval Oceanographic Office, which had commissioned the Knorr, the ship that helped find the Titanic. The guys in Defoe's yard helped me crate and pack up my belongings for the move to DC. I remember a guy named Junior, who was the Defoe employee who often interacted with our office. Also a gruff but kind yard worker who had lunch every day at the Empire grill. Two hamburgers every day. They had them on the grill for him before he even showed up....
