Kimono was introduced to Japan by Korean monk as funeral clothing in plain tan material color which Japenise copied it to make it into their own clothing with coloring because they had none. Japenise history only go back 2000 years compare to 5000 years for Korea.

hi, I just wanna know about tuck sewn kimono sleeve for furisode that usually worn by maiko. Are their length sleeves was based on their height? cuz I have some furisode and nagajuban for furisode that has too long sleeves for me.. I wanna adjust based on my height but I don't know where should I start to tuck the sleeves

I'm so sorry but I'm not the best person to answer this. There is a great Facebook group called Global Kimono, where many of the members are well-studied on maiko and geisha. Check them out - I think you'd find it really helpful. Good luck.

I'm unclear about the shoulder meas/sleeve to sleeve. Where on the wrist should the kimono fall? When is the shoulder meas. too large IN CENTIMETERS, as that is what most kimono seem to be measured in?

Does the underwear kimono sleeve length match the outside kimono?
@nancymcdonough98675 жыл бұрын
Yes, the juban sleeve is supposed to fit snugly in the over kimono sleeve. If the underkimono sleeve is too long, I have seen it hemmed so it does fit. We always give the measurement of the juban sleeve so folks know if it will fit inside their over kimono.

.Is it safe to say that the sleeve to sleeve measurement can be equal to the hip or waist ?
@nancymcdonough98677 жыл бұрын
Well, not always. I haven't found there to be any ratio between the measurements - keep in mind that most vintage kimono were custom-made for the original owners. So it's tailored to her measurements, whoever she was....

Please note that, while I have been working with vintage kimono for many years, I have no training in kitsuke (formal kimono dressing) and mean no disrespect to the art of kimono dressing or those who are willing and able to undertake it. This video is only meant to show the complete novice how she might wear a kimono and obi to an informal affair, where being dressed "correctly" is not at issue. (And I apologize for mis-speaking in the video when I say that the deceased in Japan are buried - they are, of course, creamated.)
