Always interesting to hear Harrison's law firm-centric perspective. I'll note for the record that a fulfilling career in the law outside of the law firm environment is possible. I've been a federal sector government attorney for more than 20 years now, and have no intention of doing anything else until after I'm eligible to retire - which is when I turn 57, by the way.

thanks very much for this video. I'm an Australian and hope to transfer from Aus Biglaw (HSF/KWM/Allens) to US Biglaw after a few years. I just have one question - how far down the ladder will I be knocked down in terms of Cravath? For example - if I'm a 4th year lawyer in ECM or M&A at a top law firm such as HSF over here, and transition to any of the cravath scale biglaw firms in the US, will I be knocked down to 1st, 3rd, or stay at 4th? Thanks for your time.

There is the story of a lawyer who died at age 40. He came up to heaven and complained that he has a wife and children who need him back on earth. The angel replied: we looked at your billing records and according to that you are already 126 years old.

Sounds like his billable hours aged faster than he did!

I find this very insightful! I think this applies to every job as well. On a different topic, how much do you know about the legal profession in Canada and the differences from US law firms. Not really sure what I am asking for, just any knowledge on Canadian law would be greatly appreciated. Considering this as a career in my country.

Thank you! I'm glad you found it insightful. You're right, many of these principles can be applied to various professions. As for the legal profession in Canada compared to the US, there are several key differences in terms of education, practice, and regulation. This is 10/10 advice. I’m in a rough spot right now, haven’t worked in 1.5 years because I had to spend that time taking care of my dad full time before he died. Working on back into the workforce right now and this is much needed, if very tough, advice (can’t use your firm since I only have close to 1 yr experience, and worse still I want to transition from transactional work to lit). Thank you for posting this and sharing this info for free. You’re changing and improving a lot of attorney’s lives

Thank you for sharing your experience, and we're glad to hear that you found the advice helpful. Transitioning back into the workforce can indeed be challenging, especially after such a significant personal commitment. We're sorry to hear about your loss and the difficulties you've faced. Remember, every journey is unique, and it's important to prioritize self-care and resilience during times of transition. We wish you the best of luck as you navigate this process and pursue your career goals. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need further support along the way.
