I’m trying to catch my first bull trout before the end of the season, is there any particular tips you have for me? I’ve recently been targeting them with streamers in deeper pools.

@@MarekHelman2834 hey Marek. My biggest tip would be to leave them be right now. Bulls spawn in the fall and we want them to be able to spawn successfully. I’m sure that’s not the answer you were looking for but bulls are a threatened species and need all the help they can get.

@@janlendlperalta5017 big streamers will usually be a good idea but i've also caught some big ones on stonefly nymphs. Keep exploring and you'll get one!

Honestly try to think about the general habitat; not the specific water. If you go by “mountain rivers in Alberta” and start fishing them you’ll find the bulls and cutts. Put in the work, we all did

Im hoping to get my first fly rod this year and have heard thst guided tours are really great to have success sooner, but i worry sbout being so inexperienced. Thoughts?

Most fly shops have courses that can introduce you to the basic skills and techniques so you can get a good idea of what Fly fishing is like. The shop I guide for, OutFlyFishing in Calgary does this and it’s free. Their next one is July 13. Guided trips are also a great way to learn, but I think you’ll enjoy a guided trip more with a few of the basics already in your skill set. A guide can help you learn other skills like reading water as well as working on your basic skills. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I hope this helps! Most big bulls I’ve caught have been on big stone fly nymphs. If I see one I usually drift nymphs pat him before I try a streamer.

Me too. Once you drag a streamer through it’s pretty much over for that spot. I like to start with less “showy” methods and move up

There was no way to get down. It’s hard to see but that pool had no go around on either side that I could do with rod in hand. Believe me I would have loved to go downstream on the second fish but my mountain goat days are behind me and I have never been a good swimmer.

That’s what I use when I’m chucking streamers and I was wishing I had one as my arms fatigued. I certainly would have been able to get them in quicker if I did.

Nice fish! I almost caught a bull on a nymph once. It was way too big and the current snapped my 4x off. It was quite the exciting surprise though!

Sorry. This spot was found through time, effort and dedication, it’s special to me and to others who have also taken the time to find it. Because of the respect I have for that effort, locations are not shared on this channel. Southern Alberta is as specific as I get.

Oh they sure do Nick! Put a big stonefly on with a mayfly underneath and a couple split shot to get 'er deep and hold on! Hope all is going well for you!

nice job! I have only caught small bulls on nymphs and large bulls on streamers.... not for lack of trying to catch them on nymphs just no luck.

In an ideal world yes… unfortunately I usually only the hope of the long handled net. In this case both of these difficult nettings were my own fault for being under gunned and in poor position. Thanks Ernest for always watching! Hope you have a great Spring!

This looks like a small Alberta Creek I fish that is a few hundred yards from a very popular stocked pond. Everytime I leave and drive by and see everyone standing there watching their rods I think to myself "If you all only knew" I have never seen anyone else fish that stream.
