Nice tutorial. I'm not sure this will work for my Tunnel in the Sky (by Heinlein) 1955 paperback where the individual pages came loose from the paperback cover. There is a lot of yellow glue on the cover. The pages came off as individual pages, not as a block. And yes, they are yellow - cheap paper. And yes, I can probably buy a copy real cheap at a used book store, but this is "my" copy from childhood.
@SquirrellyNerdyJess5 күн бұрын
@@Ishkatan There is another method for that sort of binding, which I have been meaning to do a video on for ages but just haven’t got around to. It will take some time, but you can put a thin line of PVA glue along the edge of a loose page and glue them back in carefully, one at a time. Line up the non-glued edge before putting the glued edge down. Let dry for 30 min each. If the whole book is falling apart, then it’s sometimes better to carefully remove the whole text block, square it up, put it in a press, and glue the entire edge back together, but you still may then have to tackle some splits or loose pages individually to finish it up.

My favorite books about books are: Miniature Books by Anne Bronner; The Library Book by Orlean; Remarkable Diaries; The Man Who Loved Books Too Much; The Most Beautiful Libraries in the World by Bosser; A Bibliography of the Works of Mark Twain; 500 Handmade Books; The Madman's Library; The Catalogue of Shipwrecked Books; The Roll of the Scroll; Bizzarre Books by Ash; and the Know-it-All. I'm halfway through Treasures of the New York Public Library and it belongs in this list as well. The irony is that many of these books I listened to as audiobooks.

I'm looking for a way to reduce the darker color of a water stain on a light colored cloth bound book. I've seen interior pages improved with adding more water and drying with tissue and pressure. I had intended to give it to friend when it looked great, but now I've stained the spine. ((((( Its not an expensive book but one I happen to have and not need anymore. I'd like it to be more presentable than it is right now. The polish method won't do for this one. Got clues?

I found a 1952 Anne Frank with out the dust jacket . But it says early edition. What does that mean?
@SquirrellyNerdyJessАй бұрын
@@andygalindo8978 Well, the Diary of Anne Frank was first published in 1947, so “early edition” will indicate it was published shortly after the first but definitely a later edition or reprint. I’m guessing you saw that in a description online? It would be more specific in the book itself I should think. But early editions are similar to what I called “faux first editions” in my video; again, that’s just my own term. An early enough copy to look very similar to a first for a fraction of the cost. 😉

This is a VERY helpful video, thanks so much for posting it. A question though: at 4:20 or so, you show a light colored book with dark rectangles on the front and back covers, which you say is extremely faded. This implies that the cover was originally black, yet the cloth on the inside of the edges of the covers is the same light color as seen on the outside. How would fabric INSIDE fade? Is it possible that dark colored books somehow transferred color to a book that was in fact light colored?
@SquirrellyNerdyJessАй бұрын
@@gunnarthorsen Fair question! If you’re unsure, it’s always good to check the edition online against other copies. In this case, I happened to know it was originally a black book. What I imagine happened is the book was stacked in between two books with those edges poking out toward a source of direct sunlight over a long period of time. The portions hidden by other books would have maintained their colour, but everything exposed would have faded, even the inside edges which extend beyond the page block.

I grew up poor on the eastside of Long Beach and then it west side of San Bernardino. I’m Cambodian/lao American male, so needless to say reading is my guilty pleasure. Isn’t that crazy. Now I’m older, out of the hood, and I started to embrace things that make me happy. Pro wrestling, yo-yos, and books. So I look for books from my childhood. I’m currently on the search for all the old goosebumps, but only through 2nd hand stores. I just started a few months ago and I’m up to 200+ books with notable titles too. From Hannibal to water for elephants to push. I read them too. I’m working on building a library in my loft with my wife. Can’t wait!!

This is awful and you clearly don't know how a book is constructed. The "netting" is called mull and what you are doing with this method is causing further damage to the book.
