The ominous music starts once they pass through the stone gates. This is an interesting horror film in that most all of the scary stuff happens in the day during blindingly bright sunlight, and not in the dark. Yet, the camera lens purposely blurs the view so that even common daylight still seems very other-worldly. This beautiful, old house is Dunsmuir House in Oakland, CA, near SF. It's not just a movie set.
