Hi there! So the straight lines of planar heads (or Asaro heads as they’re otherwise called) are intentional: basically they exaggerate plane shifts on the face and where they occur. This is useful in watercolours because, if you wet down your paper, the paints will blend to create organic shapes on their own, even though your edges are straight. The angles on the planar head correspond to anatomical details under the skin. Hope this helps!

I recommend Prang to my students, also very economical with good color load and they are pigments, not dyes. Pigments are more archival while dyes are not- they fade very rapidly in sunlight. If you want to display your art without it fading away, always stick with pigments.

Thanks for the reference Amanda-I’ll look into Prang! I’m aware of dye based’s poor archival performance in theory but from my experiments with dye vs. mid-range pigment based wc’s (Windsor newton cotman) I’ve actually seen better longevity with dye-the problem I’ve had is that to get anywhere near the intensity with mid-range pigments you need to load it on the page until it becomes leathery

That said thanks for bringing this up-I will try to do a video where I discuss more or the cons of using dye and pros of using artist grade pigment based as well as a discussion of staining, lightfastness and bleaching!

@@annmackowski3369 Prang are available in 8 or 16 colors and under $10 in most places I've purchased. Also sold online and Blick Art carries refill pans. Just avoid the washable ones, they are weaker.

I think the Prang sets were originally intended for schools, a lot of elementary schools used them. However I've noticed lately schools seem to be going with Crayola watercolors which I think are far inferior. The Prang sets that I use for my students are pretty old (like me); I've been refilling them for years. It's possible they aren't as good anymore but I think it's worth checking them out.

I’m looking forward to checking them out! I’m based in the U.K. but go back to the US frequently so will see when I’m there!

Cool; please let beginners know that water paper is best to be used, and not copy paper. ✨😉✌🏾
