Really a pitty FreeCAD cannot load SketchUp models - this would be an amazing value
@FCBlounge2 сағат бұрын
Yes, SktechUp Warehouse is a good source of models. Unfortunately SketchUp uses proprietary format, so I do not see FreeCAD being able to import this format natively. I remember years ago Warehouse offered most of the models in dae format (or some other format...), is this not true anymore?

If the solids are based on a Draft objects such as Wire, Line or Recantgle, you can stretch the underlaying 2D geometry and the solid stretches too. It does not work on solids which are based on a sketch object.

I like the fact that people are making tutorials on the Draft workbench, which is very often forgotten, even though it provides many solutions when creating models The Polyline function, for example, is very useful for drawing tubular frames or pipes, as it can automatically integrate radii in the corners however, for this kind of 2D drawing, I tend to prefer the sketcher workbench
@FCBlounge15 күн бұрын
There are many different ways of achieving the same result in FreeCAD. I think it is one of FreeCAD's power. It is sometimes hard to tell whether it is more advisable to use Sketcher or Draft for output like the one in the tutorial. As you pointed out, I found very few Draft tutorials, so I created this one :)

Hi Tom, thanks for your video. I'm exploring FC for several years now and still finding new capabilities / options ;-) Inspired by your video I've found a method to trim B-splines (regardless of which WB has been used to create B-spline). Yes, unfortunately it’s not supported by the Draft.Trimex command. But try following, if you don't already know: take the cutting line and change to the Part WB. Extrude the cutting line symmetrically. Then select the B-spline and the extrusion and use the Slice apart command. Ta-da ;-) Cheers Duncan

I am new to FreeCad and I started my education on Part Design. I find Draft and Arch so different to Part Design. I wish they were more uniform and less arcane. Hopefully in the next versions?
@FCBlounge21 күн бұрын
I doubt that there will be some drastic change in future versions. The thing with FreeCAD is, that workbenches can be created quite independently of each other. This is a strength on one side, but a weakness on the other side, as there may be very little commonalities between workbenches. That can be sometimes frustrating. For instance there are basically two different ways of creating dimensions - Draft Workbench dimensions and TechDraw Workbench dimensions.

I am curious to what degree FreeCAD draft could be a replacement for AutoCAD for 2D work.
@FCBlounge22 күн бұрын
It is not a 100% replacement at this point. The Draft feature set is quite extensive, but there are still some limitations and the 2D workflow is generally slower than AutoCAD. It is getting better with each release though. I think the biggest problem in practice would be importing and exporting to and from DWG/DXF. If you need to exchange data in these formats, there are limits of what import and export to and from DWG in FreeCAD can do.

At about 6:20 you manage to fix the scale of the view to .05... how come I can't get lower to 0.1? unable to enter 2 digits...
@FCBlounge25 күн бұрын
You need to change number of decimals in FreeCAD. Go to Edit -> Preferences -> General -> Number of decimals . I guess your current setting is 1, change it to 2 or 3. It is a bit unfortunate, that the scale can not be changed independently of this setting, because it can add unwanted precision to your project. But that is the way it works in FreeCAD 1.0
@FCBlounge25 күн бұрын
You may also use expression (the blue circle in the scale field) to insert numbers smaller than the precision you set.
@polpero25 күн бұрын
@@FCBlounge Oh... nice... I didn't think that the expressions could overule general prefs... Is there any chance that a better integration of Draft WB in TechDraw is on its way in a near future? (as highlighted in the end of the video)?

@@polpero I do not know if better integration of Draft is in the near future. I know that the developers are conscious about the limitations. The question is when will they find enough time to fix these.

Thanks for the tutorial, but man if FreeCAD draft is inefficient as a 2D cad solution, somebody on the FreeCAD team needs to learn classic AutoCAD and get the Draft Workbench to work more like AutoCAD, in particular offsets, trims, stretching and extending. What it takes 5 mins in AutoCAD in FreeCAD can take up to an hour of endless clicking.
@FCBloungeАй бұрын
FreeCAD was not developed to be a 2D drafting software. I think currently it is also not the main focus of development. I agree that some of the tools are clumsy when used as a 2D drafting software compared to software created primarily with 2D in mind such as AutoCAD. I think the developers know that, but the problem is that there are not enough resources to fix everything in short time. But they are moving ahead slowly, but surely, in my opinion. Even with the above said, it is still possible to create 2D drawing in FreeCAD, even though sometimes slower than with other specialized tools.
@sillonbono3196Ай бұрын
@@FCBlounge I agree with all that you mention, but if FreeCAD is to be successful as a BIM it will have to improve the Draft workbench, most of what is needed is already there, it is mostly a case of mimicking the workflow of a 2D cad program a bit better, I'm not saying they have to clone AutoCAD, but just one example in the video is how the grid doesn't expand automatically to the drawing's extent, and you turn it off, it comes back on on its own.
@FCBloungeАй бұрын
@@sillonbono3196 I agree with you that there are a lot of powerful tools and that there is a lot of functionality in FreeCAD, which needs to cleaned up. It is true that the grid does not scale dynamically. The grid 'coming back on it's own' is actually a feature - the grid can be setup to turn on automatically when command is started, that is why it showed up and disappeared when the command was finished. I did not mention it in the tutorial, because I wanted to focus on the core task at hand.
