Hearing this woman speak warms my heart. She gets it! I made the move from teaching Spanish after 7.5 years to becoming an ELL (English Language Learner) teacher this year. I now serve in a school with a study body count of 800 of which 90% of those students are Hispanic and mostly Spanish-speaking. And while my EL students adore me, and I love being able to use my language skills to help struggling students, it has caused the teacher who I co-teach with to become very jealous and envious. It has gotten so bad that she's outright told me not to translate even while knowing full well that multiple students did not understand English. I say that to say this, while most teachers almost always have teams and departments that they are a part of, ELL/ ESOL teachers are oftentimes working alone or with a (cruel) core content teacher. Please check in on them if they appear to be unwell. Although my students would run up to give me hugs and strike up conversations with me in the hallways, the co-teacher I worked with hated it and did everything in her power to bring forth my downfall. And while enduring her personal attacks was nothing fun, I completely drew the line when she started telling me to stop speaking to them in Spanish. Language services are a FEDERAL right that EL students are warranted. Nonetheless, I am aware that everything happens for a reason and have applied to become the EL Compliance Coach within my district. Working alongside this nightmare of a co-teacher has in many ways actually been for my good although she intended to harm me. But that is how God works and I look forward to hearing some good news soon.

Dear Dr. Hakuta, My name's Pirun s.. It is to nice to remember and found you on the internet. The last time I was listening to you as assistant professor at the Bilingual Conference in Chicago in early 90s. I'm 72 this year and tried to think back during actively involved in annual ML conferences. And I'm still tutoring Cambodian adults bilingual learners Civics and government. This is one of the reason listening to our former Bilingual Conference presenters as you, Dr. Samuel Betances, Dr. Jim Cummins just to name a few. Are you still in contact with them lately? Wishing you the best health!

I randomly came across an article that the school wrote about the Mixtec language and as someone who speaks Mixteco I think it’s so beautiful that this school acknowledged the students and their families to provide a better educational experience for them. It’s really amazing to see that this video is 7 years old as I struggled immensely when I began going to school because I was one of the very few kids who only spoke Mixteco and I was put into years of ELD because the school assumed I just had learning difficulties. I commend the school for recognizing the barrier that existed for those students

It is important to mention that if services continue throughout the student school life, it stops at 18 years of age. It is not permanent.

Very meaningful concept. A person's name is so important and we need to be more respectful in treating each student with the utmost respect. The very least we can do it to correctly pronounce their name.

In my opinion, it's always better to be safe than sorry. Yes, it might scare the parents a bit and it might (might, no guarantee) make the kiddo feel ostracized. But if the referral wasn't necessary and they do NOT need intervention services then, the drama of that week or two weeks is over and done and everyone moves on with their lives. But if we don't assess and the kiddo doesn't get the help they need as soon as we notice something, the impact could take YEARS to un-do if ever.
