Anything with that much nautical thematics can only be Mastodon haha. Have heard others compare it to Leviathan and can very much see where they’re getting that. Liked the song, need to listen more times to see if I really like it though.

It sounds like it is a mastodon song because it mainly is, outside of the Randy vocals and the first solo the rest is all mastodon, Brann said the main riffs for the song were actually written in 2006. So it’s basically a mastodon song with LOG features for vocals and 1st solo. Also Randy and Troy’s vocals went together really well, I’d love to see Randy become the new Scott Kelly and have a vocal feature on every mastodon record

If you count the individual chapters of the epics, you actually have 12 songs, so i would have liked to see them evaluate it like that instead of flushing a whole side of an album. I think Fountain Of Lamneth is one of their best epics for sheer vast sweep and experimentation. And I Think I'm Going Bald gets a bad rap cuz people can't imaging Rush having a sense of humour.

Production was the main issue with this album I feel (a common problem for Rush, they often did not sound as powerful as they do live, many albums sound kind of small and not enough room sound, too much DI type of sound and muted drums). Geddy's vocals on this album also needed more attention, he is pitchy and often just shrieking. A lot of the music is great though, Alex plays amazing on it as does Neil. Some of it is a bit too hokey and Dungeons and Dragons for sure, they were able to nail the concept album w 2112 and Hemispheres. They probably should have made another hard rock album with individual songs versus doing the concept thing, they were not quite ready for that yet. But it is an important part of their history and does have youthful charm for sure.

Never was "That Bad" -it's a great album. Every song. STP had developed a sound and they wanted to stick with it. In my mind STP went the route of AIC as William Duvall had similarities vocally to Layne, yet still a sound of his own, like Jeff. Why? One reason is because they have a catalog of classic songs that will be sung by the new singer live. And Jeff Gutt (Pronounced GOOT) does justice to those songs live, but also upon repeat listens to new material he clearly has his own distinctive voice. Another reason is because if they had a singer that didn't sound anything like Scott...everyone would be complaining that they don't sound like STP.

I never enjoyed much off this album. Like you, I also thought there seemed some inklings of what we came to know as Rush, but that's about it. Even the cuts y'all liked, I didn't. Neil lamented their public musical development, and this is the kind of stuff I believe he was talking about. No band could ever get away with doing this nowadays. If there were no "Fountain of Lamneth" there would never have been "2112." In the middle of that suite is one of the tenderest love songs ever written, Panacea. And Bacchus Plateau is just...muah (chef's kiss). "The Fountain of Lamneth" is a friggin' MASTERPIECE for this young band. So what if I told you the inspiration for "I Think I'm Going Bald" was actually Gene Simmons? ("At least to my taste or whatever") Meh. You guys suck. I am engaging your algorithm. I think that the LP is OK. Lakeside Park. The biggest difference that separates this LP from the other Rush LP's is the drumming. Peart isn't there. It's OK,but kind of bland. Prior to Moving Pictures Peart said that he changed the way he held the sticks. My first Rush LP was 2112. We would play football/ softball in th street and my buddy would get his speakers and put them on his porch and jam Temples of Syrinx!

The Didacts and Narpets passage from Fountain of Lamneth saves Caress of Steel from being a stinker. Test for Echo is a good record. Sonically, it was engineered very well. CoS was and is an excellent album, perhaps among my favorite 2-3 Rush albums. The reason why it initially failed commercially is obvious, since up to that point Rush were catering to a more straight forward rock and blues audience, as they opened for Kiss, Uriah Heep, Rory Ghallager, etc. Had Rush opened for more progressive hard rock bands like Jethro Tull, CoS would’ve sold just fine. FYI. Since Rush has become a recognized prog-hard rock band, CoS has since sold very well.

Caress is a great album. I bought it soon after release. Think I paid $3.99 for the album and played it nonstop for a month. I think anyone trying to go back in the Rush discography will run into issues with certain albums and not really understand how each album fits into the band’s evolution. The fans who jumped on the train in 1974, like me, have a very different perspective, I think. We are the lucky ones.
