So the vast majority of information I’ve gotten from either Hooky’s Substance book or from live performance videos (which is how u can see he used the 6 string for songs that don’t even use the B and high E like As It Is When It Was and Subculture). His book goes extremely in depth regarding recording and production and he’ll also just make general comments. From Low Life until Lost Sirens, every single bass part that isn’t played on the 6 string was played on his red Yamaha BB1200s, according to himself. For Movement and most of PCL he would’ve used another Yamaha, I think the BB1200 (sunburst color). On PCL he used fretless 4 string for We All Stand and Ultraviolence. And also no worries about asking man! I have a lot of knowledge about this stuff which would be considered extremely niche to even my musician friends so I love every chance I get to talk to anyone on here

@@cgienthusiast I appreciate that! And yea I highly recommend it, it’s probably my favorite music autobiography I’ve read. Even beyond the extensive details about the music and bands life, hooky is just a very natural storyteller, which is definitely not the case for a lot of others I’ve read

@@cgienthusiast definitely yeah, that’s why I played that one on passive for this vid and then a jazz bass for the standalone vid on it. There’s a lot of those cool details to be discovered, like the fretless basses or no chorus pedal on Every Little Counts. One of the biggest reasons New Order is my favorite band is that combination between self producing / experimenting and not being trained musicians, the music has so much replay ability since there’s so many layers of ear candy

Did peter hook actually play the fender bass vi? This sounds amazing
@juliancoversbass
@juliancoversbass 5 ай бұрын
Thank you man! So Hook never played the Fender bass xi, but the bass xi is identically tuned and tonally to the Shergold Marathon 6 string that he did play. There are some hardware differences like the Shergold having a larger neck or the Fender having multiple pickups, but all in all if you’re looking to play those B and high E string Hooky parts, the bass xi (Fender or Squire) is a good pick. Hooky did play a Fender baritone guitar (same body and neck as a bass xi) very briefly in 1980 when New Order’s gear was stolen in NYC, but he quickly realized that baritone guitars are tuned differently and if he tuned it E to e, the strings would snap easily lol.

Couldn't agree more! I've tried to give RA's solo work a chance and I can't get through anything since it's boring, lifeless and doesn't take any risks. The Verve as a band and the chemistry and creativity that makes their instrumentals is second to none imo and to Ashcroft's credit, he ties it all together. If you haven't heard the unreleased tracks from the Urban Hymns and Forth sessions, definitely give those a listen. All Ways are Maybes (Nick McCabe's pick for pest Verve song), Tina Turner, and Blue Pacific Ocean are lightyears ahead of any RA solo songs.

Which LFO did you use? Sounds like chorus or flanger
@juliancoversbass
@juliancoversbass 11 ай бұрын
The pedals a Moog MF 103 12 stage phaser. You can definitely get a chorus or flanger-like effect by using it (or in this case, using it badly); I’ll call this tone “intentional flang”. I’ve used it for every video I’ve done so anything else would give you a better idea of how I use it. That being said, it’s just a cool pedal that I got from a synth friend and I tried it out on the bass and decided it gives my bass tone an effect hardly anyone else would land on, so really that’s why I use it.

disagree the Charlatans were not "mid tier" they were a top band. The first four albums were out of this world, peaked with 1995's the Charlatans! The rhythm section was second none by that point :) Other than that great job!

I definitely didn’t mean it in a bad way! I think the better way to put it is (so far) they’ve been a band I like but don’t love. The first albums similarity to the roses made it addicting for me and it’s one of my most played albums, just no further spark came from it. That being said, they’re coming to Austin in January to do their second album in full (along with Ride doing Nowhere) and I’m sure seeing that could be a game changer for me. PS Tremolo Song is my favorite of theirs and I’ll be doing a cover of it soon

@@juliancoversbass that is gracious of you. Charlatans were one of my favourites of that era, I've seen them live 3 times I think in Toronto in the 90s. I'd go see them and or Ride if you get the chance. I see you like these 80s/90s bands, have you hear of Brian Jonestown Massacre? They are still going strong right in the same wheelhouse as they Brit bands but they are from San Fran. Check 'em out sometime.

@juliancoversbass
@juliancoversbass Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I’d say most bassists who aren’t involved the writing process (although in Manis case he definitely deserves some credits on a few songs) will follow the approach of hearing the guitar / melody, coming up with an idea in their head, and then either noodling / jamming until they get that idea or using that process to go in a new direction and get a better part. Most bassists I like are definitely more of the jammy type, like Mani, McCartney, Peter Hook, Simon Jones type players. I think maybe Bruce Foxton and Nick O’Malley are probably good examples of players who take a more calculated approach to their parts. Overall every bassist + song is a unique case.

Glad I can finally watch somebody playing the actual melodic bass lines. Does anyone knows what's the effect that Hooky its using on this song besides the chorus? There's something that gives the bass some kind of metallic sound.
@juliancoversbass
@juliancoversbass Жыл бұрын
Thanks man! And I honestly have the same question about that metallic tone (Especially the parts during the verses). Off the top of my head, I feel like there was possibly some sort of layering done over Hooky's parts. Maybe an additional synth playing the notes or maybe even another bass guitar in a different octave? My studio / sonics knowledge is meh at best so that's just me thinking out loud. But yeah compare the bass tone on True Faith (and a bit 1963) to any other New Order recording and there's a noticeable difference. For what it's worth, Stephen Hague did say he messed up recording/mixing the bass for this session.

@juliancoversbass

Wasn't familiar with the songsterr version till now. That version is the same notes but yeah I'm fairly certain Mani played up and down the E and A rather than what that says. Then again I'd say songsterr gets it a bit wrong for the solo/outro when it goes to A. At that point, I believe the way I play it is how Mani played it.
@NickHarman
@NickHarman Жыл бұрын
@@juliancoversbass Songsterr is often a bit odd. Sometimes it shows a song with the bass tuned up a half despite the actual song not being like that.
@juliancoversbass
@juliancoversbass Жыл бұрын
@@NickHarman I definitely like Songsterr as an alternative to regular tabs. I know I used it plenty before I could learn by ear. The "problem" with Songsterr is it's user submissions so there is potential for them to be either flat out wrong or prefer playing in a way that isn't the exact recording (which there's nothing wrong with!).
