Oh my Lord THANK YOU!! This is just the info I was looking for regarding the SIZE of the KDP PROOF barcode vs the REAL (for sale) BARCODE!! I did purchase my own ISBN but I did NOT click the “yes, my cover has a barcode” button because I wanted KDP to add a barcode. The Previewer shows that I have a bit of room between my author bio and the barcode. But when I received the PROOF in the mail my author bio was cropped just a bit. I was just about to readjust it and then order another copy when I decided to research it here on KZbin first. Your video is the ONLY one I’ve found so far that mentions this VERY SPECIFIC ISSUE!! YESSSS, KDP LIED😠. I wonder how many self-published authors have been vexed by this conundrum! I will rest assured that their own Previewer is accurate. Thank you so much for the clarity! HI I need help. So book is done. I am trying to add second pen name to my author central account. Do I add the second pen name first under my original account OR do I publish the new book first under my original account then add the book and second pen name later?
@The_Open_Book
@The_Open_Book 2 ай бұрын
Publishing comes first, AC profile comes after :) First, publish the book on KDP under (only) your second pen name, as you would want it to be in its finished state. Once it is published, go onto Author Central and *try* to claim it. Because the pen names are NOT the same, Amazon will ask if you would like a new AC profile for the second new pen name. It will get set up from there. 3 different Pen Names can function separately under one AC sign-in account. Hope that helps!

I believe you understand correctly. 1. Publish on KDP under new pen name. 2. Go on original Author Central (old pen name) account and try to claim the new book. 3. I'd almost catch ultra-hell for this from most hardline 40k nuts out there, but that's pretty much how I go into Warhammer 40,000: the Black Library audio book versions of the books I'd already read. Those are almost audio dramas in themselves, and absolutely hilted with excellent voice acting and foley. I highly recommend anything you can find, but the readers tend to always be as grim and listenable as the work is readable, so be prepared for gothic misery. Funny enough, one of my favorite 'talking records' that I enjoy revisiting now and then is Laurie Anderson's _The Ugly One with the Jewels,_ a collection of stories she's published in a book she'd made. Anderson has a terrific voice for telling stories and ideas that only come out of the late 70s avant-garde frame of mind. Her story about her and Andy Kauffman, for example, is both hilarious and heartwarming, reminds me of my writing friend and I just a bit. Tom Waits' _Nighthawks at the Diner_ is also a 'performance' album that has some parts of him talking about stuff here and there between song, it's an overall great roadtrip album for solo driving in general, but that's just my flavor. I've had some people tell me how they can *stand* that timbre of growl in Tom's nicotine baritone.. _they're dead now._ heh, _that's also a lie~_ There's more to it sometimes than just 'books being spoken by a voice'. I think Dan Abnett's _Eisenhorn_ story is told in 1st-person, so I'd want to have an audio book of that... unless it's out already and I should go get it. And interesting perspective on the 'overuse of I' thing in writing, that kind of static word usage drives me insane when I see it ONCE ON A PAGE AT ALL, but that might just all be in my head.. along with the voices.. _and the promises._ terrific work as always, hope you're enjoying your day!

Weirdly enough, I first got into audiobooks almost exclusively listening to ones narrated by the author. I like that particularly if it is someone's memoir/based on true events. One of me faves of those probably included Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. I also loved Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake, which is a beautiful book that helped me fall in love with mushrooms haha. I do think audiobooks also help to reduce the barrier of longer books for me. I listened to Stephen King's Fairy Tale at one point, and Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver which there is no way I would invest the time into reading in book format (just too long for me), but as an audiobook at 1.5-2x speed, sure!
@The_Open_Book

@The_Open_Book
@The_Open_Book 3 ай бұрын
Eva is certainly an unreliable narrator. :) She is very opinionated and the entire novel is written as a form of her trying to find reasoning for things, so it has an inherent bias: her need for self-justification. You could assume the novel is twisted to suit *her* narrative, but that would make the entire thing not worth reading--what's the point if it is *all* a lie? The value of it comes from the grey area of what happens: how much was her fault, and whether *any* of it was unavoidable if she was a better parent? Eva was a bad mother to Kevin :P That's for certain! haha. It's likely Eva interpreted many of the things Kevin did as intentional when they were not, which fed into the image of him being evil and beyond her help. It very well could be a malicious cycle of the two interpreting each other wrong, but it's hard to boil down to him being abused as an excuse for becoming a killer. I would highly recommend reading or watching the movie to see what you think of their relationship! :)

Comfort stories or genres are what you make of them as an author AND a reader, respectively. Luckily, this is where fanfic can USUALLY help this issue, but I think it's a case of what can be gleaned from a given story. I can enjoy a simple cup of soup, but the body sometimes craves a meal and not a snack.. I guess, I'm also kind of hungry right now. I try to attain this in my own story (again, NEARLY STARTED, I PROMISE!) where there's no time necessarily wasted, but more like.. I call them 'Save Game' moments, where the character(s) involved in the adventure of the moment catches a breath, gets a head together, or just takes care of a need for water or the restroom. We're only human, after all~

well, now that I looked up what adverbs are again, I'ma have to go thru all 118 pages (or 59 actual pages) of my primary work to adjust some stuff. Writing is a passion, a hobby, and a practice to me, but all self-oriented. Unpublished, hardly any posted work to speak of so far, and positively riddled with fear, but as far as what I've heard of mob mentality and industrialized popularity of *_anything_* these days, there's a perspective I've got: you've gotta be hungry to be a great cook. It's that case of struggle and adversity being part and parcel to the whole element of great praise in the first place; you can't start out great and just be the standard for yourself without any precedent, that's a bridge too far with a car trying to drive across it. There's less of a hardline process of accountability before success sometimes, you're not seeing things, says I. Look, this is a market I've got no basis of comparison for because I _really_ gotta start reading again but, to truncate this diatribe down to how I feel personally, I'll say that I'd rather be a writer people enjoy reading first, and not so much a published rockstar success story. You're also right on it being a case of the customer/fans, but we've gotta watch what we say these days... I don't like that.

Editing ain't cheap ':) You're right though, I should give that particular author/house another chance. They were newer at the time. I would just be quite disgruntled if I was a writer taken under their wing and been allowed to publish such. I'm getting a lot more worried about the fact that a lot of thieves and "artists" now can VERY easily bypass the generative AI filters on stock websites simply by not disclosing that they used AI. Put in 'anime' into any of the search engines and then turn on the filter that says "exclude AI" and there is still a ton of AI on display. So for many people it's already hard for them to distinguish AI at first and even second glance. Now these same sorts of people are thinking they're doing a good thing by avoiding it and it's still getting to them, and they may use it in their minds ethically but they were actually tricked by the thieves yet again, and these websites are allowing it to happen.

In the same vein of not making any proclamations as a writer, as a reader I'm finding better quality self-published novels than I could have expected based on the continued narrative from a certain segment of the industry that wants to see self-pubs fail. It really sucks when anything happens to "validate" that false narrative. In fact, you can see where a lot of trad published works are lacking in quality compared to self-pub, like there's been a shift, and now the gatekeepers are coming for the other side as trad scrambles to deal with their general creative and quality bankruptcy. So we reach another point where the self-pub writers can't win, and the readers can still miss out on truly amazing work because someone(s) in the background are doing everything they can to keep that voice out of the market for any number of dubious reasons (unless they pay up, of course)
@The_Open_Book

@@vb_scottwrites I think general self pub quality has gone up a lot lately too! I guess my big conflict is with the marketing of the publishing "structures"? If there's more eyes on it, it should be better? I am consistently impressed with solo self pub authors, it's the process promoting gurus that rub me so wrong heh Maybe this is all because I *want* to trust and assume indie pub houses care more than traditional ones.. but with the capitalism beast in everyone's side hustle, perhaps I need to stick to trustworthy recommendations only

I am ok with AI being used for a tool, such as scheduling, giving a quick and dirty explanation of something, etc,... but the whole generative based on stolen creative works/put into a smoothie and calling it "art" thing where it goes ick for me. I think I would prefer all AI "art" being disclosed as made by generative AI. In the example you use, I kinda view how he used it as "fluff" or "AI glitter". I think he probably could have found a way to make the video work without AI art, but the pacing/editing of that video was so fast paced that it probably felt hard to keep up with that for the whole video. Because of the insane pace, the AI art probably felt like a manageable solution.

Funny enough, this vid and its thoughts have helped me confront some thoughts of my own, but that's for another time. Part of what makes this damn website attractive to enthusiasts and information interpretations _,par excellence,_ like yourself, is that you can post up on it easily as the fancy arrives, but the weird hoops that you gotta jump through just to be visible at all are as multifarious as they are exhausting, and it can really gouge a depressingly vast separation across even the most steadfast and well-trimmed of sails-- in short, posting on this site is fun and exciting, but having it not be a burden OR an exercise in futility is fuckin' aggravating, every step of the way, no matter how tough and ready the creator may be. But, it also seems to be the same across dozens of venues, all from different walks of life, it's just that this one is unique in being open to so much at once, you get overly eager as the octopus who plays the drums. It's also the good idea to go with as well; plenty of creators multi-channel as it is, its just that their sub-counter soars while art suffers. You do what you feel, and let it go naturally, and remain optimistic and cautious, as you no doubt can already do. I've enjoyed listening to your stuff, but now I can get some insight on a genre I've not seen enough of in books: horror~ seriously, I think all I've read is _The Troop_ by Nick Cutter. Good luck, and stay sharp in this new endeavor, you're helping us verbose, grandstanding schnooks out there get a lesson in literature with insight to boot, so thanks for that ✨📚

That first clip of Whitney begging for compliments of her art were incredibly cringe. It's exactly how I see myself when someone hands back something I've written and the only question I ask is "what did you think?" Instantly I feel like I'm coming off as desperately seeking approval even though I need actual constructive comments. Then I make it worse by not asking other questions because the initial reaction seemed neutral, even if all the other person is waiting for is a prompt, but I'm getting wrapped around the axle feeling like ANY question now is going to seem pushy, so I just say "thanks for reading" and leave the person alone. Very self-defeating, I know. The other part of what you were saying made me think of agents and publishing houses that are loudly and widely trumpeting that they are only interested in (or very heavily favoring) submissions from BIPOC/LGBT authors. My thoughts don't go to how unfair it is for that to happen, especially because it's a myth that they are getting any better rep even with that since white authors continue to dominate representation, but to how it would feel as one of those "sought after" authors. If the publisher/agent is telling you they're only interested in your identity, THEN your art, would you feel good about that? Or as the video says, fetishized/monetized/commodified all before they even experience your art beyond the surface-level queries? I can't answer that as a non-identity-signaling person but I think if the shoe was on the other foot and agents and publishing houses were saying they ONLY take submissions based on how I look or whichever fad identity I claimed, I'd feel like my art didn't matter, but hey, my foot is somehow in the door despite all odds! Then they'd reject me anyway for a double slap in the face. Do people realize the incredibly, INCREDIBLY low odds of getting through to an agent, THEN to a real publisher? White or not, it's less than 1% to an agent, and of THAT, less than 1% to a publisher. (Again, proportions of that less than 1% are still heavily in favor of white people, but still. It basically sucks being an artist for EVERYONE if you're trying to earn money through traditional means) At the end of the day, I don't get artists that become successful either way and find a way to not be grateful for the money/success and the fact that somehow, above all odds and luck, they managed to get noticed and succeed over so many other artists that are pouring everything they have into their art and are getting nothing out of it. I think that sums up nicely the "get the bag, girl" line at the end. Someone wants to give you money for your art. Why do we have to find a way to make that suck? It's like pro athletes. Yes, owners and leagues are horrible with the way they treat their commodities (I'm sorry, "athletes"), even despite the money, but, at the end of the day, you're getting paid obscene amounts to play games. You should definitely get the same benefits regular people get like health insurance and blah blah blah, but come on...

It really is a great translatable topic, the Art scene of it all in The Curse makes it feel "extra" since they're dealing in such extremes of effort/payoff/hypocrisy but it happens all over the place. The Curse also did a really interesting job showcasing the other side of that coin (valuing identity over content) in how those minorities who manage to receive prioritization don't "owe" the biased overlords for that. It was hard to watch sometimes because in my (I'm assuming your mentality too based on the athlete/publishing % parts) we know we would be so grateful for those opportunities. And when we see others who got them, squander them, it leads to a bit of resentment. But isn't that just misdirected jealousy when we should be focusing on condemning a flawed system of distribution and biased prioritization? Also, as for your questioning in whether you would feel value in your writing if your work was put secondary to your person, I think I'd definitely have an existential crisis over that--- to get such an opportunity but to have "earned" it for the wrong reasons. For Cara as a character and those in real life in a similar situation, it truly is a.. Curse! ;P

Ooh I wanted to hear you reach your conclusion and know there was another artist who understood why the market for NFTs was destined to collapse. It's fully valid to reason from aesthetics, but I'm afraid it's difficult to expect widespread agreement, as aesthetics are invariably subjective. The value of a reproduction would certainly seem baseless, but then there's Andy Warhol. So it was a matter of being thankful finding someone reaching the right conclusion, but I feel that was the right conclusion in a way that works for you, or who share your values and style. There was a sort of soft wall that kept getting between you and a decisive and objective refutation. It was the notion of value, I mean value in terms of Ethereum, which would then convert to dollars. As an artist with a grad degree in finance, this has always been difficult to explain two other artists, in fact, they can become quite hostile. The fundamental objective issue with NFTs is that they're valued in cryptocurrency. The purpose of cryptocurrency was to serve as legal tender. It's been a long time since you've heard anybody in cryptocurrency talk about the currency aspect, because it's failed, it will never do anything but fail, and it fails by definition. Currency does I have value that fluctuates based upon speculation. Currency has value value based upon the underlying economic indicators of the nation for which it serves as legal tender. Courtesy has no value of its own. You'll never find a dollar being volatile in price. The financial infrastructure of nation carefully manages a value of its currency, they don't exult when it goes up, they aren't depressed when it goes down, because it doesn't matter. It's a somewhat useful tool to equate trade interest rates, and other macro economic factors. If that seems a little arcane, that's been my frustration since 2015. Literally no currency traitor took this stuff. Seriously enough to say what I'm saying. I became a motion. Artist who studied currency trading. In the artistic community I have no clout whatsoever to talk about finance, though I'm one of the very few who understands it, because cloud accrued to those who have made money speculating on crypto and selling NFTs on the auction sites, and who then crow about it. And trust me, I've tried to engage beeple. No artist, colleague of mine, or not, wants to hear that they have been lied to, and manipulated by money launders, gamblers, conmen or financially incompetent. Why would they believe me? The people buying their entities are rich, richer than I am. I don't think until the day they die they'll know why this all fell apart. There was a big hint: it all started falling apart exactly when supply shocks coming out of the pandemic and gendered inflation. Inflation will lead investors to Do what's a flight to quality. They'll sell all speculative assets to invest in things denominated in the US, US dollar. That killed crypto of all kinds, including bitcoin. And so comes onto to defend bitcoin or crypto, I'm going to have to decide if I do my 100 deeper dive into economic, and financial concepts they won't believe anyway. I'm glad you did it for your beliefs.

I believe I've understood you :) yeah, it's really hard commenting on those structures or even holding meaningful conversations because those fully invested in it don't want to even humor the idea that it could be a lie or poorly founded. As much as I feel bad hearing about average Joes brought into the crypto illusion, it felt much the same as the fine art market to me, which is why I found it easiest to equate to. Thank you for watching and your very nuanced comment :) Let's hope your frustration in this field of discussion will lighten someday, heh? Who knows, maybe the internet will disappear and we'll all have to re-evaluate everything's worth.. *shrugs hopefully*

@@The_Open_Book on that count, how it's seemed to deceived, even to delegitimize the art market, I fully agree. Zach, I've been good friends for more than ten years with one of the NFT creators whose work was judged seminal and placed on permanent exhibit at the Musee Pompidou last year. he is the most joyful person I've ever known I've explained things to him, who am I to tell him not to do the thing that's made him famous the world over and wealthy enough no longer to live in his car at the beach, but to own at least one house that I know of. But I also know that legitimacy and the art market can hardly be said in the same sentence. There is no greed like that of those who in the arena where a guiding principle is that commerce is corrupt. Auction houses and museums were always going to be the first to throw their doors open to anything that brings in a high bid, and I don't think they believe anything so high-minded as true believers believe. This article really flushes out the problem The Bouvier Affair

Heartstopper Volume 5 is available at Safeway right now. It might also be in Wal-Mart. Though I really hope people buy the book. If they aren't bought in a certain amount of time they get shipped back to the distributor.

Ugh YES! The whole shipping back to the distributor thing is awful. Depending on the system, sometimes authors can get charged for the overstock/returns. I saw a Heartstopper book IRL for the first time the other day and they are THICK. That'd be so much cost.

At least when people bought a bottle of Snake Oil, they could enjoy the benefits of a drink of cocaine water for a little while... A certain former and future president is like an NFT--proclaims to have and bring so much value into the world, but try and ask "what have you actually done?" and it will be crickets, gibberish, or doubling down on the aggressive, misleading, false advertising that got him there. It would have been great if the same number of people who called bullshit on NFTs had done the same for...*ahem*...other things

It might just be me, but it feels like blind faith is growing? Which is concerning to be sure. Particularly I found NFTs fascinating because I had to confront this inequality in value back in school when learning about high art and installation pieces etc etc. "What value is this banana taped to a wall providing you? Oh, it's not $10k? Weird..." lol As much as I feel bad for those conned, it's also fitting I guess. Same goes for propaganda and the like but.. is that what snake oil actually did?! I want some now xD

Currently I'm building a shop over on Ko-fi full of non-fic quarterly mags (kinda deal), since I don't have the ability to physically distribute zines atm and wouldn't want to charge that much for such small products on Amazon. Given a printer and some space though, I'd love to make a deal distributing to local establishments on my own. If you know of a space where that sort of publishing flourishes, please let me know! Amazon is a novel-man's game and I'm not there yet ':)

You made this video two years ago and it still has no more reviews on KZbin than it did 2 years ago. Super strange because this movie has big names, is about a famous author, and fictional biopics tend to be controversial, so it stumps me as to why people just didn’t care to review it. 🤷🏻

When I made my review on Shirley, I was having trouble finding anyone notable who'd also done one; to see whether we had even remotely the same takes. It felt like my search was trapped in a weird vacuum! A lot of viewers that have this say the same, and others have been like "you're review was stupid and other people said it better bla bla" SO idk if it's just a select few of us that can't see them for some reason? xD I'd have thought loads of people would be talking about it too!

@@The_Open_Book especially since I’ve heard a few of my favorite reviewers actually reference this movie in other reviews they’ve done. Which is how I stumbled upon it in the first place. This I feel happens sometimes with certain movies and I don’t know why. For instance, the movie Room with Brie Larson. Won a bunch of awards and was a break out film for her. Good luck finding a review on KZbin about it from anyone well known.

Yeah if you have a slower computer OR just low space on it (so you can't generate optimized media) things could get really frustrating to deal with, but I hope you find yourself in a position with software that can handle it soon enough :) I don't have a browser based editing software to recommend, because I've got less wifi than *I* do space lol but one of those could also be an option for you in the meantime?

@@The_Open_Book I'm determind to use the tool my friend (&now you) recommended as she bought her laptop to my house to show me it and it looks perfect for my needs. I really want to get onto KZbin, as a fun hobby, not as a job-job. As theres no urgency I'm happy to wait to get the new computer. In the meantime I plan to do film some video's so I then have a pile to edit once I'm sorted. Then I can release on a fortnightly scedule with less stress if I have a build up of vids. At least thats the plan... I have two tripods, one for my phone, one for my camera. Truthfully I've had these tripods for about 2 years... I'm slow to get going. But I want 2024 to be my year I do this!!! Thus I contacted a friend who does lego video's and got advise. Now she is cheering me from behind. I have soooo many ideas building in my mind haha

three things. 1. I mainly follow Robot Co-Op, Phirmth, StarBoiBlue, and BigNoseBug, and they don't really talk about literary conventions and other book-learnin's, so I guess the algorithm was going off of how I've been subbed to OSP for a long time, but I've never clicked their new vids or anything; I think it was for a Phoenix Wright thing they did years ago? I guess there's no accounting for taste, really, but that's no excuse for the mic-bumping. Negative ten billion out of ten, would not watch again. 2. In your posit here about perspective VS baseline content, you touch on one of the most important things to making creativity continue to function in the overall creative bubble we can encase ourselves in as creators. I unnecessarily say 'we' as if I've done anything; I only posted stuff on my DA years ago, made a few blogging attempts, started some decent Angel Hare fanfics, and began my own writing 5 years ago, but I've yet to really post anything official. However, there's what you also talked about as well. I worried endlessly about either being thought of as a phony/copycat/hack all the time, or having it compared to something I never meant to copy, but do honestly acknowledge as a _contemporary._ A lot of that kept me from getting anything DONE though, let alone ATTEMPTED, and that's where a lot of stuff gets lost, including small, humble, but enjoyable efforts such as your channel here. I don't know what forces were at work to have you appear on my front page today, but I'm glad they did, and I'ma sub because I wanna hear more, and I believe in stickin' up for the little guy (or gal, in this case) 3. As far as internet comments are concerned, if this one is any indication, it's that they can largely be, as the Bard put it, "..full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." I've also never seen Macbeth, I just know that quote. I think with the speed of exposure the internet affords us, we can make snap opinions and believe our better-formed thoughts to NEED to fit into a smaller, faster comment, and that just causes them to devolve into a kind of internet formalism unique to these conversations. I just wouldn't put much stock by a commentator who wants to be heard, but can't take the time to properly spell 'please' or look beyond content that is more than a few months old. Bach wouldn't have survived in a market like that, and I guess that's just a tragedy right there. Good luck, Ollie, thanks for sharing, and I hope I can pick up more about what you're puttin' down in these vids. You have a terrific mind for explanation, a voice for long-form content, and a down-to-earth avatar, which is harder to make than it seems. Maybe she can transform into an actual Bucket of Good Faith in vids like this, little bucket with eyes and a mouth? ✨🪙

To be fair, DA was a mess back in the day, and you were likely to have someone claim you stole their OC just by breathing tho x) If your comment is any indication of the quality of things you produce, I hope you manage to work towards sharing your stuff online more :) You've also got a very nice, kind voice! Well, that's the idea with idiots; they see similarities, they take it for plagiarism. Be it inspiration, similar themes or just plain coincidence, when you are on the internet, you *will* deal with idiots. My advice to you is to avoid engaging with them, or feeling like you owe them an explanation. Their one, and only goal, is to demotivate others.
