When I was 12 years old John was my boyhood hero. 66 years later he still is. He's never too busy to stop for a chat.. I used to love hearing his 1/4 time, 3/4 time address to the players at Alberton.

I am certainly not a West supporter but it was great to see some other team apart from the ‘big four’ (Sturt, Port, Norwood, Glenelg) winning a premiership for once! That West Adelaide side of 1983 contained possibly the most powerful forward line that I have seen in more than fifty years of watching the game

Port , as usual then, knew they were in trouble before the game as they went the man. Dirty mob. Good to see they have the tarps back in the 80's. They should have never been introduced to the AFL. Cost the AFL and footy too much money. This mob are the biggest front runners . Dont put the tarps away.

Vic teams were always still pissed to the eyeballs from their real grandfinal win celebrations a week or 2 before. Whereas for south aus teams these matches were much bigger and carried much more meaning than their own grand finals, and they prepared accordingly. Yet Vics nearly always still won.

This is the best style of football. Tough, play on at all costs, non-stop excitement. Today's style of chip pass, fat sides, backwards to go sideways to go forward, stop start play is nowhere near as good as this!
@grahamferris290Ай бұрын
Always good to see South Australian sides defeating Victorian teams. Unfortunately, in these pre-AFL days, the Victorians used to make a bit of a joke of these competitions, always resting six or seven of their top players for these games and never treating them with the seriousness and respect they deserved

I love the venom in the coaches speech. Torrens v Westies was a genuine rivalry. Woodville should never have been allowed to enter the competition.
@AlecJohn-c5oАй бұрын
He talks up the Norwood suburb and says "not everyone can afford to live in these parts"....then right on cue through comes the Ford Falcon bush wagon with the mandatory replacement drivers door that hasn't been painted. Perhaps it was a Port Adelaide supporter coming to mow the lawns or maybe Don Dunstan's boyfriend had landed on tough times. 2:14

Great outcome! A pity Woodville g ad to amalgamate with Torrens only a few years later ( thanks to interference from the expanded VFL). Also a pity those cigarette manufacturers got the advertising they didn't deserve.

I reckon SA would have beat WA in a genuine State of Origin clash. The problem is the SANFL had an exodus of top players at end of season '85. The majority of those players played in that unforgettable win in Perth the year before.
@AlecJohn-c5oАй бұрын
When you consider SA's population this semi final drawing 40,000 people is like 120,000 rolling up for a semi final in Melbourne. Just shows the pulling power of Port and Norwood and why I think if things could be done again differently it would of been better giving Port and Norwood the Afl licenses rather than rushing the Crows into existence. Sadly some of this is Port's fault and as a Port supporter I wish they could of brought Norwood along in a joint submission but it wasn't to be.

The year Port failed to make the finals. From memory one of only five times in their history up until that point. Not an ideal start for Russell Ebert as Coach. West would go on to win the flag well coached by King Kerly. Both Ebert and Kerly no longer with us. How time moves on.
