our Beko condeser heat pump drier is quicker than our last vented drier. it comes with a long warranty that i have extendeded with Domestic & General insurance who we have used for over 10 years for all our appliances. I also can verify that they are very quick to replace eqipment if their engineer can not fix it.

Agree BUT when drying with a heat pump dryer and our solar panels are generating it costs zero to dry cloths and unlike the vented dryer not condensation in our utility room

As a few others mentioned we use a dehumidifier if we need to dry a large amount of laundry or bulky items like a king size duvet that doesn't fit in the tumble dryer. While a dehumidifier is certainly not going to dry clothes as quick as the slowest heat pump dryer, it has the big advantage of not causing any wear & tear on clothes as they hang still on the drying rack and you can dry everything all at once instead of multiple loads in a dryer, just set up another drying rack. The only maintenance with a dehumidifier involves emptying its bucket after use and vacuuming its dust filter every 2 to 3 weeks.

Thank you for a very well presented comparison. I am converted back to my original plan of replacing my current condensing dryer with another when it becomes too costly to repair. Heat pumps are not for me, but recent Which reports were beginning to sway me. I feel better now.

I have a vented beko dryer that is taking way too long to dry items, looked at this fix but no issue with the button. I did notice that the element heats up for about ten seconds and then switches off for another minute. Is this normal or is the stat gone

My old dryer was a Miele vented, after 20years the heater element failed, it's a very expensive part, I did repair it as the element broke at the end by the terminal so just shortened the element and re-crimped it, but it lasted only a year so concluded the wire element had gone brittle. So not wanting to spend £100's on an old inefficient dryer. And having a sealed house renovated to modern standards with MVHR, no trickle vents, solar etc, a heat pump dyers was a no brainer as heat it develops passively heats the kitchen it's located in. Another Miele. Ruled out other brands due to bad reviews ; mouldy heat exchangers, tangled bed sheets due to no reverse, excessive drying times etc. Well, surprising to say, It dries as equally as quick as the old vented dryer; within an hour with the same load. So maybe those that say their dryer takes several hours either have an inferior appliance or the heat exchangers are clogged up with fluff. Only criticism is annoyingly it has the same carbon brush sensor system as my old vented dryer for automatically sensing when the clothes are dry. Any Miele dryer owner/repairer will be familiar with the click-clack noise they develop when the brushes wear, and I'm already on the second set of brushes after 12months. This is a Miele thing, nothing to do with it being a heat pump. . How long it will last overall (ignoring the noisy sensor brushes), time will tell. The refrigerator circuit is hermetic, it should never leak, unless damaged (for example heavily jolted when moving house or a ham fisted repairmen), like a fridge or freezer they aren't normally regassed so don't have Schrader valves like a car or office split air-conditioner would. If gas is lost you can assume the unit, like a fridge, will likely be unserviceable or uneconomical to repair. Not sure how many appliance repairers are F-Gas qualified anyway.

Our heat pump tumble dryer is 7 years old, works perfectly and saves a small fortune in electric usage. It was the very cheapest Beko and we follow the maintenance as stated in the manual. Your cost analysis is skewed as the heat pump recycles the heat and uses less energy the longer it runs. I will not go back.

Can you still get the slider bearings for the drum for a Diplomat APM8620, which is a rebadged White Knight (probably the 43AW but no auto reverse)? Back bearing kit is common but can't find the front slider lit in stock anywhere. Want to keep the old thing running for years yet given vented models will soon be extinct.

Thanks for this. I wasn't aware of this lastest government idea to help meet an arbitrary target, set a deadline for the removal of the current option before having a robust, thought through alternative which does not hurt the consumer. Witness power stations, electric cars, air source heat pumps, etc. How does this affect washer/dryers - which we have as we don't have room for separate machines?

1. You offer some very sound advice. Thank you for posting. I think manufacturers should consult you how to make the machines better: with the "Right to Repair" it might become obligatory on them! 2. Heat pump tumble dryers typically have higher capacity for some reason. I've seen mostly 8-10kg, so energy efficiency is even better for bigger loads and family life 3. They have useful features: smartphone app tells you status and when done, you don't have to go and check every 10 min 4. You typically get longer warranty periods included. I've seen up to 10 years 5. They are substantially heavier, so difficulty of taking them up some flights of stairs without a lift should be seriously considered, also taking them down when replacing: not a two man job but perhaps 3 or 4 6. Just like diesel engines made to last longer than petrol engines due to the loads and pressures they work under, I fully expect heat pump units are made to last longer, considering the longer warranty periods they come with 7. Heat pump units run slower and therefore normally quieter. This is especially important in flats with open plan kitchens 8. Due to lower running temperature, I expect heat pump units are safer products than vented and condensing ones 9. I've seen heat pump units going for around £260 so prices are coming down

as I dont have to sit by the machine while it is working, I could not care less about the drying time. I am 56 years old. My family runs a heat pump dryer, we used to run condension and waste air dryer. None of these ever failed because of a motor or bearing failure. Also, as a certified HVAC engineer, I can assure you the compressor is very rarely at fault. A valid argument is that the extended runtime creates more fluff. I had to defluff our dryer after 5 years of family use and it contained a gigantic pile of fluff

The spider used to be made from stainless steel and never failed. These aluminium ones are designed to fail. It's a disgrace, I will never ever buy a Miele again.

Had a Beko condenser that cost £250 fail a couple of months outside of 2 year warranty, John Lewis no help at all. The £800 Miele heat pump we replaced it with has lasted 8 years so far, with large energy cost savings over the condenser, so is probably well into profit compared to the condenser experience I had.

Summary: All Heat Pump dryers I'm called to repair are broken. All HP dryers are the same and are all bad designs , past, present and future. This applies to everybody everywhere. In real life, things are much more complicated. In my very limited experience, The newer Bosch HP dryers have two nested folded lint filters that are very effective. But then they also use the accumulated water at the end of the cycle to backflush the evaporator coil. That water also passes through another cleanable filter mesh. More fussy?, yes but way more efficient than conventional. How long will it last? That depends on how well they implemented the design. EOL disposal concerns?, yes, more so than simple machines. GE has a HP all-in-one machine that is also very efficient, runs on 120V-15A circuit. They have the entire sealed system (the Heat Pump) as a removable module just under the top cover. So easy clean, repair exchange or replace. Being a combined washer dryer, it has the benefits of taking less space and being able to complete a load from dirty to dry without having to be there to move cloths from washer to dryer which would be wonderful for some people. But that also means that you can't have the next load washing while one is drying. I imagine that there are other machines that the perfect solution for some and not for others. What would be useful is real world reviews of efficiency, reliability, functionality etc. of individual models.

Just buy a quality brand one and do the basic maintenance like filter cleaning. My Miele heat pump dryer is still going strong after over a decade. It already saved more than its own worth in energy costs compared to a non-heat-pump one. Getting it was a very good decision.

Well said. I have always felt it in my gut that not enough emphasis is placed on the awful built-in- obsolescence of today's technology. After watching a number of your videos I have overhauled my 13 year old Zanussi vented tumble dryer. The drum bearing is still in super condition as is the motor. So I've replaced the drum felt seals, drum rollers and drive belt. All has been thoroughly vacuumed out(including the fan and fan housing). I'm hoping that it may last another 13 years. I will be looking for a backup heating element before they become unavailable. Of course if the control module fails 😥, then I may be screwed!

My washer will drain perfectly fine at the start of a rinse spin cycle, but fails to drain at the end, meaning the door is usually locked shut for some time. I've drained into a bucket and seen it happening, but it won't drain at the end of all cycles.

Any idea what an "H1" error code on a Bosch washer dryer means? I have changed the heating element and NTC without success. Not sure where to go from here. Not drying clothes, possibly not heating water either. I can't find much info on any "H" error codes at all.

If a heat pump dryer uses a quarter as much power and runs for 2.5 times as long, that's a big electricity saving. They also run cooler, so are less likely to shrink the clothes. As for repairs needing expensive equipment to regas, that rather depends on the need to do it. I've had fridges over 50 years still on the original charge. How many tumble dryers do need regassing? How much does the regas kit cost, in comparison to the cost of the engineer's van? Yes, longer run timmes might add wear to bearings and motors, but again, I'm not convinced that this is a likely failure.

So glad I saw this video. I initially wanted a condenser tumble drier but most things were pointing me towards a heat pump version. I didn't really consider the extra drying time factor causing more frequent repair possibilities. Or the cost or viability of those repairs. I am 100% going to stick to my original thoughts & get a condenser version. Thanks for the video :)

You can buy a heat pump drier for £300 and a condensing one for £200. You really are not going to be spending out to repair it when it is 5 years old! Sorry but it is 2025 not 1975! The heat pump will use far less energy to save the extra cost on buying it.

I'm a handyman. This is such a great video, thankyou. Sadly the political environment the UK is in. Will pay no attention to your incredible research here. You have highlighted a lot of information here for consumers. The manufacturers can be dealt with by us the consumer. I feel by asking for the older technology rather than the newer maybe that will work. British politician's probably already have major shares in the industry.😂😂

Great video, some useful information. Just a couple of points. I am a qualified person for LV and HV systems and would like to point out that testing the supply cable with a multimeter and declaring the circuit dead is not acceptable. The meter could have failed after the last test. ALWAYS test the multimeter on a known live circuit or proving unit then carry out a check on the circuit to be worked on and finally re- test the multimeter. Then and only then can the circuit be classed as safe to work on. One other thing, ampage ? No such thing. It is current.
