Good advice. The easiest way to set ladder to correct angle is to stand up straight in front of ladder with toes touching the base Extend your arms straight out you should be able to reach the ladder rung. If you cannot reach it the ladder is not set steep enough. If you can grab the rungs without full arm extension the ladder is to steep. No measuring or calculating and recommended method by most ladder manufacturers
@rooferchicks12 күн бұрын
I like that! I'm going to have to try it. My friend says he likes to put his extra steep so the homeowner doesn't follow him up lol.

Ohagin low profile vents, im using 1 for intake placed at lower part of roof , and 1 for exhaust on the top by the ridge. My question: should i place the intake where i get the wind blowing that way intake sucks all the air in, should i place exhaust opposite side of roof? Or should both be on same side? If same side wouldnt the air blow into the exhaust vent ?
@rooferchicks16 күн бұрын
The wind doesn't really impact the vents - I usually opt to put vents on the back of the house if possible for better curb appeal. You do not have to put both on the same side. One vent isn't very much - you might want to check the ventilation calculator for how much you need. ohagin.com/vent-calculator/

How do you keep from tearing the shingles when you put the ladder against them And obviously you can sit on the ridge shingles as you go
@rooferchicks26 күн бұрын
@@johncory3774 If the shingles are still pliable, they will bounce back after you remove the ladder. If they are brittle, they may tear, you are right. If you are concerned about it, you can stick something between your ladder and the shingles (my guys use foam cushions) or use a stabilizer bar on the ladder. How do you nail ridge shingles to a ridge with the ridge vents? Is there anything you need to do to get it right?
@rooferchicks28 күн бұрын
The ridge cap usually comes with nails that are for it that are longer than roofing nails (like a 8 penny). We use 1.75" ring shank roofing nails on high profile ridge caps and especially when going over the ridge vent to attach the ridge cap. On the rest of the roof we use 1.25". Hope that helps!

In Florida, since I believe that the insurance companies stated they would drop a majority of policies or would end up moving out of the state, the legislature passed a law that roofs have to be replaced at 20 years regardless of the condition of the roof or the length of the warranty. This of course is putting a burden on many homeowners as the cost for replacing a roof has gone up by as much as 400% from less than 5 years ago. In my neighborhood of 28 homes, over half have already had roofs replaced just recently or they are planning on having them replaced in accordance with the insurance company's deadline.
@rooferchicks26 күн бұрын
That's all pretty interesting. In Texas, insurance drop customers after 10-15 years even though the materials are warrantied for much longer. I can't imagine passing a law though that forces people to do home maintenance - there are so many houses I see that are waaaaaaay past needing a roof. Can the government do that? We are getting into politics, but I wouldn't think Florida would let that fly after all I've heard about them during Covid! Ha!
@FlaThunderstorm25 күн бұрын
@@rooferchicks Our Governor Desantis realized that insurance companies, with State Farm leading them, threatened to either drop thousands of policies or to move out of the state. Desantis and the Legislature compromised and solved the problem as best they could. I blame all of this on Joe Biden. His administration has made everything so expensive, especially for businesses, that the insurance companies were forced to pay exorbitent amounts for repairs or replacement of homes and just couldn't stay in business without acceptable profit.

As far as I'm concerned, your ENTIRE ridge venting concept is completely USELESS. So, you build the roof up the the apex, but not quite? Then, you have to worry if it's all even and junk, and how much it's "raised", if you wanna call it that, above this long gap you got in the top of the roof. Sorry, but this joke of an "engineering' concept is not only useless, but needless work to maintain. Your ridge venting can't possibly, on your best day, evacuate the stifling hot air where I live out of the roof like a convection fan tube or any rotating electric or naturally rotating ventilation. Period.
@rooferchicksАй бұрын
This video is about how to replace a plumbing pipe jack, so I find your comment interesting. BUT I do have videos about ridge vent and I do believe in it, strongly. I agree that a power vent probably pulls more air, but as a passive vent, ridge vent still works as long as it is all at the same level on a roof and there is enough ridge. It's a known fact that hot air rises, so as long as there is an intake, air is going to move through your attic. But if you don't agree, we can agree to disagree!

I don't like turbines too much but my superintendent does. They used to be made better than they are today - nowadays after about 4 years they start rattling and clunking. I prefer a power vent if there isn't enough ridge for ridge vent.

Good info - do you know if we can install two power vents across from each other on a hip roof or should be put them on the same side. Side by side they would be less then 6" apart.
@rooferchicksАй бұрын
You could do either one of you need two - but that’s a lot of power vent. A regular power vent covers 2400-2800 SF of attic floor space. You can over ventilate and it will suck AC out of your living space if it can find a way.

The best thing I've found is a radiant barrier underlayment (one brand is Polarium). We've used this on about 5 houses and it has helped significantly. But last summer one of these houses we did got struck by lightening, and it traveled all over the entire roof. I think it was conducted by the drip edge and not the underlayment, but I'm not 100% sure.

The best shingles last 10 years in FL if you are lucky. The warranties are a joke. I have an exposed fastener galvalume roof that is going on 30 years old. Once a year i check for any look for any loose fasteners. I have had to replace two fasteners in 30 years. It has already oulasted three shingle roofs. Its only a few thousand dollars more to go metal in most cases. Just do it.
@rooferchicks2 ай бұрын
You've had fasteners with gaskets on them that have lasted 30 years without dry rot? That's impressive. You say the warranties are a joke, but I've had GAF replace about 5 roofs over the years under their warranty program, so I've definitely found them not to be a joke. I agree, metal is great. But it isn't perfect!

Hello. Currently I have small ridgevents and 4 passive box vents close to the ridge vents to account for small ridge vents. Do you think that is allowed.
@rooferchicks2 ай бұрын
In my experience, those vents will work against each other and you will be only circulating air between those two types of vents and not pulling properly from the soffit vents. You might ask a knowledgeable roofer to take a look at it, especially if you think your attic is hotter than it should be.

Shingles The Most Expensive From GAF Is Only 10 Years Warranty And I Donot Know Why You Say 50 ??? Metal Is Better And More Easy To Install And Faster. Aluminum Metal Has 5 Years More Warranty Than Any Shingle In The World. Amén.
@rooferchicks2 ай бұрын
I think you are looking at their standard material warranty where the smart choice period is only 10 years. If you get a Silver or Golden Pledge warranty, it goes up to 50. Look at this link www.gaf.com/en-us/resources/warranties/residential and open up the Timberline part and you will see what I mean. Metal can go on easy, but if you have a contractor who doesn't know what they are doing and don't flash it all in correctly and do the seams right, you have a very expensive big mess in a hurry that is almost impossible to fix.
