Luke had great potential, but a strong streak of self-destruction.

The look he gives his mother at 6:40 conveys so much emotion. So much to unload. That's why I love Paul Newman.

This scene with Luke & Arleta reminds me of my Sunday visits with my mom at Larkin Home for Children! When she did show up? Mothers & Sons relationship are always complicated! But she did state one truth! A bitch finally does stop recognizing her pups as hers and treats them as competition for everything!

Being hard is hard. Luke loved his momma, and his momma loved him... She could never say it and neither could he. Alot of people don't even have that

It's the skill a mother has to her kids especially boys my mom never had any girls so there was my dad my brother and me very male dominated house hold thank god I still got them both still there in there late 70s when I visit them they look bit older I do aswell but a smile off my mom makes my day I'm getting left the house off my folks but it doesn't matter I'd rather have my folks

One of my favourite films but I think this scene is the most touching. Paul Newman played a great part but Arleta (sorry don't know the actresses name) absolutely nailed that scene.

This scene reminds me of how my Mom was always in my corner , always truthfull, straight forward and always loyal.Especially when my life was spinning around mostly by my own doing.Wish I could hug her , talk with her , tell her I love her one more time.

HOW MANY TIMES WAS THIS SCENE PLAYED OUT IN REAL LIFE DURING THE DEPRESSION ? My grandfather was sent to a work camp in Louisiana 1934. His mother would visit and talk to him through chicken wire . She fell into such a great sadness, she got addicted to morphine and died .
