Really cool collection. My favorite and it's tough to decide is the anodized black with brass hobnail thumb roller. Just a great looking lighter.

Hello! Just found today a Brother lite but a gas one, a leaky gas one 😅 I'm on the disassembly/cleaning and I'm really surprised to found fluffy cotton inside the gas tank 😮 Just same like in petrol lighters...I don't know if it's normal or if I should remove this, I mean I don't know if that's the way they build it at time or if someone though it was a petrol lighter and feed the tank with cotton...if someone can help me 🙏 It's really strange... Oh and please excuse my not so good english translation 😅

@@DependableFlame Left a comment on your Cygnus collection video, but I wanted to add a bit here - There's one on Etsy that they're asking a mint for... But it's shaped like the old Pan Am Airlines building. Table lighter, but can be removed from the base. That's the only one I've seen with a unique/custom shape.

I got a Ronson table lighter from my father. It has a circular shape of 40mm and the insert is stuck in its black acrylic base. This hasn't been removed for more than 40 years. How can I remove it without damaging the lighter or its base?

Got another interesting one recently - Looks like a standard table model Cygnus, but it's branded by Prince. The "Table Lighter Golden Force". It doesn't have the rubber feet or divots for the feet like you see on a Cygnus, but it's otherwise identical. The Japanese lighter companies are a bit of an enigma to me. I'm sure several of the brand names came from the same manufacturers, but I've never really seen much documentation of their history or collaboration.

I just actually fixed one of these recently. It was an old playboy lighter. Same problem. Concreted flint. Takes some practice to get a good technique to get everything reassembled. I was in luck that the lighter was actually new like condition and never used. So after I finished the tube clearance I was off and running. I used some of your videos as a guide so you helped me out. Next time at the flea market I'll be on the look out for these. Usually they are plenty to choose from. Probably all with the same problem. That flint tube really seems to be the problem alot of the time. Thanks nice video.

The Blackout lighter was probably based on the old "Shepherds" lighter. Its a long section of 100% cotton rope. You pre char the end. The sparker produces an ember that is super windproof, in fact the harder the wind blows the brighter and hotter your ember.😂. Just keep it dry.
@DependableFlame3 күн бұрын
I’ve never heard of the shepherd’s lighter before but I’m sure this was a fusee lighter like the Dunhill Windproof.✌️

Found this lighter in thrift shop. Seemed to me using a lighter rather than the matches which usually don't work was a good idea even thought I do not smoke. Until I looked at your video I had no idea what to do with this other than put fuel in it. Since I knew nothing did that wrong. Now I'm off the buy flint & wick. Thank you very much.

Great Video Quick Question. What year did the blue flints stop getting made? I have a seller wanting to sell some but they are from the 1980s. They look like the old ones but I'm not sure. Thanks
@DependableFlame3 күн бұрын
I'm not positive either but if they were made in the '80s I think they would be the older variety. Not sure when they quit making the old ones but the newer are a much brighter hue of blue.😜✌️

While the fuel in question is no doubt toxic, it is often used in alcohol stoves. It is what they mix with ethanol to make denatured alcohol to prevent human consumption. It is also used interestingly enough in the production and synthesis of very powerful capsaicin based products like extracts because methanol gives a higher yield during the extraction and concentration phase. If the product is to be consumed in VERY small quantities because it is STOOPID hot😂 the methanol is simply distilled and evaporated off the oily, sticky capsaicin. For pepper sprays it is left diluted . Since I do not smoke or bathe in HEET or other denatured alcohol products, and love qwirky outdoor tools its fascinating

Tom of the On The Lighter Side group obviously knows a lot about these. I actually watched him do a live demonstration of this type of lighter last month at the OTLS convention in Vegas. As I recall he used pure methanol and it reacted with the platinum in the wire to ignite the fuel. Needless to say methanol is quite toxic and their risk of fire in the hands of unknowing children eventually led to their production ban.

Looks like i need to disassemble my striking wheel and get it cleaned up, get some spring grease in the plunger and probably put the teeth up one notch to give it more spin. Thats what the pet champ needed. When clearing flints i found its better to work it by hand and not use a drill. It takes a bit longer but not much and you wont end up needing to spend three days painstakingly making a new flint sleeve by hand like i did. I dont think we should actually be using power tools to fix these things, hasnt been necessary since i nust started pushing and turning the drill bit by hand. The real trick is not making the girlfriend angry swearing and cussing at the lighter when trying to screw the whole assembly back into place on top. You make it look so easy lol

I have changed the wick and cleared the flint tube but the 60s flat lighter only lights up every 5 flicks! Could it be that the flint is lower than the wick or that the flint doesn't spark big enough? Any ideas or insight is greatly appreciated. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!
@DependableFlame7 күн бұрын
Chances are the old flint has adhered to the file wheel, clogging up the grooves and making it less effective. You could also still have old flint dust clinging to the walls of the tube causing an obstruction.✌️
@mamba777jv7 күн бұрын
@@DependableFlame That might be it! I didn't clean it up but will do very soon. The spark is kinda weak also. TY for the reply and more power to you. Please keep those videos coming... they are very inspiring! Best regards.

If you don't mind a single torch, the Jet Eagle lighters on Amazon are pretty great, used by two members of our household for daily needs. One had to be replaced, but it had a nasty fall in it's lifespan, so pretty sure that did that one in. All others have been working great. We actually just ordered more just to have around. They come in a four pack for roughly 15 dollars, or at least that is the bundle we have been able to find. These are the right angle ones, not the 45 degree ones. I have one of the 45 degree ones and it doesn't work very well.
