The microcosm seems like a beautiful pedal, but I agree with you. I've thought about buying one, but I cant justify the purchase when I can get pretty close with CB mood and blooper together. I feel like the microcosm might even be a little restrictive after so much time with the blooper

I bought one but have only tried it through a Tweed Deluxe style amp, and it sucks for that, but Tweeds kinda hate everything. Really like the tones you’re getting, I’ll have to revisit it through some more friendly amps.

Been looking forward to your review Nick, I think this might be my favourite Bleak District pedal, which is saying a lot. Have had one since day one and am blown away by the range. Always (recently) thought if I had to choose one Overdrive it would be the Special Cranker. Terra does that and a great deal more.

I knew this, and came to the same general conclusion but you articulated it so well. Back in the seventies when I got my first tube screamer, I couldn’t afford (and really there weren’t so many to choose from) more, had a great amp (Ampeg VT 40 I think it was), guitar (ES335) and I learned that pedal inside out. I knew exactly how to use it. Took some time. In the nineties, I earned decent pay, and was buying pedals just as you describe. The beginning of my realization came one day when three different pedals arrived on around the same week, and it felt like a JOB I had to do to try them out. I also found out after years that having more than two OD’s just took me out of my playing mindset. I would turn in an OD for a solo or something, and the first few seconds after he thinking “should I have used another OD? Is this the right sound?” AS I’m playing. Took my head right out of playing. I found also that just setting up an OD, I could get most at the perfect place if I just used the volume knob on my guitar. That coveted “edge of breakup”. I could adjust clean, edge, or solid OD just with that, and even more when I used th tone control on the guitar. I used to leave guitar on ten. Also, when you don’t really familiarize yourself and get to know a pedal on complex pedals (like the strymon El Capistan) you can get angst about setting it. Like if a knob gets jostled in transport, and you aren’t sure how to get the sound you want. I once sold a delay (Diamond) that I just never could get to sound right and often got runaway feedback delay, I met a guy who was interested in buying and just watching him explore the pedal (and get such amazing sounds I felt like I ought to keep it instead of sell) by intuitively adjusting, readjusting LISTENING to what was happening, and trying all different settings. I sold it to him, felt I had no right to keep it, when he could get so much out of it and was worth the lessons he gave me. For a while now I have two OD, tuner, wah, vibe, el Capistan, and EQ as my pedalboard with one off board fuzz or treble booster depending on my mood. Much happier.

I have experienced the same with photo gear. And I dont want to do the same with guitar gear. I like the acoustic most, and my main goal is to play the guitar - technique and theory - but I must admit that you can do a lot with pedals. I just dont want a ton of them. A few is enough. I'm a senior citizen finally having time to continue learning my instrument, just for the fun of it.

I'd never sell mine. You're always going to get other pedals that have overlap at some point. If anything because I have a Microcosm, I don't have a reason to get a Big Sky. I'm not one of these wishy-washy ppl that will comment that they're keeping it and then come back in an instant to say they just sold it. lol. Guitarist Tom Lippincott has stated he's going to produce a video on how he uses it, and I'm really interested to see what he makes use of with the Microcosm, it's one of the staples for his pedal board. I'd hate to have gotten rid of it before finding out what a talented jazz guitarist can do with it.

If CB ever does a Thermae mkii with stereo, I’m sure it’ll be expensive because these BBD chips are each like $30 from what I’ve heard, and you’d need 8 of them like Meraki has, but even at $600-700 I think CB would still sell a ton.

I was thinking that other gear, like the SOMA Cosmos, and later the MOOD MKII would be able to replace it. For a variety of reasons, I've come to the conclusions that the Microcosm is ideally suited to my workflow and sonic needs. Nothing against that other gear - but the Microcosm is quite exceptional.......Overall, it's the fact that it is a little unpredictable, but has presets and accpets MIDI Clock......so killer for 'ambient', and because of the switching, etc. ....it's really easy to use...............(I have quite a few videos will all the gear I've mentioned on my channel if you're interested)
