53:21 The last two episodes of series 10 were re-written during the filming block due to budget issues. According to 'TV Tropes', Kochanski was supposed to return for those episodes before the re-writes but I don't know if that was true.

I actually like this one quite a bit. S1 is seriously undervalued by the long term fan base (although I notice new fans of it don't seem to mind) but this episode is creepy and yet kind of touching at the end. Sure the monster of the week is dull, and fairly lame but Syd makes the episode. It's also the first appearance of Principal Snyder (Armin Shimmerman) so I say it's made of win,

Thanks guys for doing this. I am in love with this album and this band in general. I am going to see them next year as they are reuniting for three shows and I can't believe it.

An old school sitcom which was written by a writing team [including Carla Lane] was Sid James' 'Bless this House'. Marks & Gran also used it for 'Birds of a Feather' and 'Goodnight Sweetheart'. Like Brittas it was a common way of keeping dying shows going [such as 'On the Buses']. It certainly become more widespread in UK TV post My Family where the other writers get 'additional material' credits [for example 'Miranda'].

I'm surprised they never did do a 'Brittas'/Red Dwarf' cross over for Comic Relief in both show's 90's heyday. By 2009 Brittas had long finished so I can see why they didn't got there [and it probably would have just been Chris Barrie solo not any of the show's other cast/settings appearing].

According to TV Tropes, the original episode 5+6 of Series 10 was going to feature Kochanski returning but when those episodes were replaced due to budget issues it was dropped. By Series 11+12 Chloe Annett had pretty much retired from acting [her last IMDB credit is an episode of Holby City in 2014] so maybe that's why they did return to that idea.

5:30 Companies House states Doug Naylor was [re-]appointed as a director of Grant Naylor on 3rd March 2023 while two other long term directors [Early Dwarf producer Paul Jackson and Lesley Jane Armitage-both from YMU Business management] resigned on the same day so presumably it will be under Grant Naylor.

Just wanted to say thanks for this 'Crime Traveller' series. It's been a lot of fun and it's a shame BBC management issues scuppered subsequent series. Chole Annett doesn't seem to have any presence on social media so contacting her would be difficult but getting her on the podcast would be great.

'Playing with Fire' was the episode chosen to be read out when a cast reunion occurred via zoom during Covid though that was probably because it's the only episode without Helen and Pippa Haywood wasn't part of the re-union rather than it's quality. I agree a lot of that episode hasn't aged well unfortunately. Very interested to see what you think of 5 but especially 6-7 [without Laura or the original writers].

When Peep Show came to an end in 2015, Channel 4 still wanted a Mitchell & Webb sitcom so hired occasional Peep Show writer Simon Blackwell to devise a new show for them which became the sitcom Back. I do wonder if a similar situation happened here as the BBC had done two extra series of Brittas despite the departure of the original writers and Julia St. John so maybe they asked for a similar ensemble show for Chris Barrie as a replacement and assigned it to the writers as they'd written the odd episode of Brittas. Said writers CV's are not very impressive but this enterprise feels very rushed with series 1 arriving just over 6 months after the end of Brittas and both series of this show airing within less than a year [Sep 97 series 1, May-June 98 series 2]. As you say, maybe if they had more time [and better writers] this might have worked. Like Captain Butler the review was very entertaining despite the poor show you had to suffer through!

1:02:32 As someone diagnosed with Asperger's, I could relate to that idea. I think they pretty much make it explicit in the series 2 episode 'Set in Concrete' when Laura is explain to Brittas about tone and context of what people are saying to him [a conversation had where I was in Brittas position with earlier in my life].

I do wonder if they gave Laura a husband as a block to her hooking up with Brittas which they hint at occasionally [especially in series 4] which seemed to be something a lot of fans wanted given hoping Brittas and Laura would get together comes up surprisingly often in the youtube comments of the episodes.

Excellent info and fun to listen to you guys! I love your comment about one foot in country and one in Springsteen. I was at her recent sold out Star Crossed concert in the LA arena and her new band totally rocks. Like literally. Excellent guitar rock solo...and not sure what the flute shredding part is called. She's just super talented and has amazing people around her.
