He seems to be misinformed by western propaganda. The war started in Feb 2014 with US and US funded, equipped forces that removed the elected centrist president and recruited thousand authentic Nazi militia members. They attacked the the people of Donbas who opposed the US coup. They have lived in that land 300 years before Ukraine which really was a city state, annexed all of east and south of the Dnieper River and Russia's historic ownership of the Black Sea coast. All those regions spoke Russian as did all schools, literate and broadcast. The land of Donbas was the manufacturing, mining and industrial center that Kiev did not have.The new coup government banned use of the Russian language so all the books of the libraries were burned, parents beaten or murdered if they spoke their native language. The people of Donbas resisted the coup and eventuallly after the coup government attacked daily but the civilians there fought off the waves of attacked declared independence Russia did not enter the on=going war until Feb 2022 8 years later.
