The subtext in this famous scene is so rich in its study of English manners and sociology that it can't easily be simplified in description. The comment from Firebrand55 just below comes close enough and hits it on the head. I would't say the scene is almost inconsequential for it helps confirm Sir Randolph's moral perspective and sense of honour. In Gielgud's character Sir Randolph in effect, sees a kindred spirit and in way, and for reasons he could never explain to his house guests. Glorious acting !

When you watch YT today for channels which focus on "Street Photography", what you get is badly composed snapshots of car fenders, empty street, roads or fields, or some hidden snap of someone doing something of no interest at all - that last one being the theme, "look what I got away with". If you look at any sequence of Maier's photography, you will see the working definition of street photography: tight compositions, perfectly exposed, and a single highlighted subject, either inherently interesting or doing something which conveys some interesting theme. That's the difference between the mediocrity of YT video presentations and serious photography.
