This video is VERY misleading. The 3M furnace filter 1500 shown on this video does NOT filter out any virus particles as 3M clearly shows by the two pictures on the right hand side of the label. To get the filtration required that DOES filter out viruses particles, you need to use 3M 2500 furnace filters that does show on the label that it filters out virus particles.

Meaning that every time you use your home AC you would be breathing all this fibers right?

The furnace filter has an air flow side. It is indicated on the side of the package. It is important before you cut up the filter you should mark which side is the air flow side. Do not mix this up. I use polypropylene bought from a fabric store as my filter.

So there's two types of material they make this out of . A plastic polymer and fiber glass. Fiber glass is highly not recommended for this. If you can find a polypropylene material based one then it's ok I think

Kai Ammons I purchased a 1900 mpr 3m Filtrete filter from target online for $19.99 and a merv rating of 13 .I believe anything lower than 1900 mpr is not advisable to use in a face mask 😷 as those would contain fiberglass material was my understanding.

I recommend 3M N-95 half mask. I finished fixing my car with it. It works great, the big difference is its air tight suctioned rubber portion. Using one of these Do it Yourself masks is better than nothing, but don't be over confident and complacent with one of these on the face. I've seen people walk around with surgical masks like if their invincible. No way I would use a surgical mask for sanding or a paint job. Imagine how easy coronavirus can sneak into that mask with one sneeze or into your exposed eyes. Roll the dice. No way your safe. Always practice social distancing, minimize outside exposure, wash your hands often, and wear goggles.

There is a world shortage of masks. I am a healthcare worker and supplies are low. In the community , no masks to be found. I commend people for coming up with their own solution to try and make masks. I stay in ( hospital to home, home to work) but do need food supplies. I social distance , hand wash, disinfect, but wear the same mask over and over to get to work because masks are no where to be found for purchase .

If you have a filter in the middle and just paper around the sides of the filter, the air will take the path of least resistance and go around the filter. Also if you do not have a tight seal between the mask and your face the air will go through the gaps instead of through the paper or filter.

High efficiency filters use some form of ceramic or glass fibers in them, don’t they. I work with powdered glass and ceramic fibers and use a mask to protect myself from such. Not sure this is wise to put up against one’s face.

Just FYI to those thinking of making your own. Be careful which filter you use. Some contain fiberglass and you could be doing more harm than good. Also you can use an N95 filter but it doesn’t make it a NIOSH N95 mask. You still need to worry about fit and seal checks which may not be present. Treat as a normal surgical mask. Not as a N95 respirator. 👍

I ordered mine on target online but make sure it’s at least 1900 mpr . I purchased the 3m Filtrete 1900 premium allergen bacteria and virus filter $19.99 . It is 12x12 . You will get a good amount of filter pieces from one filter.

Did anyone bother trying to breathe through a paper napkin? The only reason you can breathe with this mask are the gaps between it and the face. What good is a filter, if air won't go through it? This mask will protect others from you, but not you from others. But if everyone wore something even as simple as this, everyone would be protected. Check out the Czech #Masks4All initiative. I have made a mask from two layers of cotton and HEPA in between, covering the same area as cotton. Wire to shape it around the nose and shaped to fit the face without wrinkles anywhere. But even that would not be enough to provide a seal. I have sealed the edges with electrical tape which sticks to the skin and provides a seal. It gets hot in there, but at least I know no air is leaking. At the same time I have store bought FFP2 / N95 masks which leak noticeably, especially around the nose. I keep seing people with the most expensive masks and not even bothering to shape them to their face, and even if they did, it would still not guarantee a seal. In the end the people with simple cotton masks may end up being better protected. But most importantly, if they are infected, and cough, sneeze and spit droplets will be stopped at the source, making sure everyone is protected...
@edfisher36774 жыл бұрын
correct..these thin masks protect OTHER people..NOT you
@deezeemb4 жыл бұрын
@@edfisher3677 This means that the filter material is wasted. Air will not pass through it, because it can't pass through the napkin in the first place. If it was between two layers of cotton, at least some of the air would get filtered.
@airleadjoemiranda57214 жыл бұрын
Not even N95 masks can filter the virus particles, they are too small to get caught by these. The idea of most people using masks is to avoid the spread of particles getting airborne while talking, coughing or sneezing.
@deezeemb4 жыл бұрын
@@airleadjoemiranda5721 Actually, the N95 masks can stop most of the virus (if they are sealed properly to the face). They do not work on the principle of a sieve or membrane with holes of certain size, letting anything smaller pass through (that would be impossible to breathe through). The reason they are tested at 0.3um is because that happens to be the most penetrating particle size. And an N95 mask is tested to filter at least 95% of particles at that size. If the particles are larger it will obviously catch more of them. Less obvious is that if the particles are smaller, it will also catch more of them. Filtration efficiency increases both above and below 0.3um. The masks work by several methods combined, most important of which is the electrostatic effect of the material. That's the main reason they can't be washed or disinfected with alcohol. As for the purpose of everyone wearing something, I fully agree with that. I did say I support the #Masks4All initiative.

Thank you for this video! I had been wondering about the furnace filter as an option; I have HEPA vacuum bags for my Oreck and it got me thinking about furnace filters. I like your reply of one of the posts...bright sunlight will kill the virus, so her hanging the mask to dry in her car will certainly make the DIY mask last for a couple of trips to the store.

You might add directions showing the filter has two sides. Make sure the rougher side is towards your face. And / or check the filter's directions for how it goes in the furnace! Better design is to make an open space in front of your nose and mouth; the mask should not touch thrse as it will get wet and moisture reduces the effectiveness of the filter and holds the virus. You don't want that by your face. For moisture protection use a piece of linen instead. Linen pulls moisture away and expels it to the drier side. Linen can be washed, simple soap and water and some agitation, then drying, kills the virus.
