If your’re close(flat and can’t quite reach them) to a few of the higher notes in the vocal melody , and you’re playing guitar, you can tune down a 1/2 step.

I'm working on a monster video on breath support and breath control. I hope to publish it this thursday. If not it will be 5th of december. I think that will help. For now a quick thing you could try is to just take in a small breath, or even breath out before trying, instead of taking in a big breath as many singers do when trying challenging stuff. If you take in a lot of air, you need more breath support energy to control it. Hope that helps :)

The energy point is the most important. Even if you can hit all the notes in a song, if you're reaching to the top of your range, while the original singer is comfortably sitting in the middle of theirs, it isn't going to sound right. Weirdly enough, changing the key - even dramatically - to where your effort matches that of the original will make your version sound much more like the original than it would if you hit all the exact pitches, but the energy is different.
@bob.smeenk9 күн бұрын

What does it mean that "breath support limits airflow" ? This sounds contradictory. By the way, great video!
@bob.smeenk9 күн бұрын
I'm working on a monster video on the subject of breath support. To try to tackle it once and for all. I hope to release it Thursday next week. In the meantime: breathing in is active. You use your intercostals (muscles linked to your ribs) and your diaphragm to enlarge your lungs and air flows in. Then if you just relax and sigh, the air flows out by itself. For singing we need the air to flow out slower and more controlled. Otherwise we couldn't make it to the end of our lines. And we would strain/break/wobble. Especially on challenging notes. The system controlling (and limiting) air flowing out is called breath support. (Keeping the intercostals and diaphragm activated after breathing in, to avoid all air rushing out immediately.) So breath support is not about pushing air out. It's about controlling airflow and most of the time this means limiting airflow. Hope that helps a bit. But it's a tricky subject. Lookout for my video on the subject. I think you'll find it valuable :)
@dalemcmillen20659 күн бұрын

It finally clicked! I had a big loud chest voice and big loud head voice but when transitioning through my break I would just hit falsetto. What I was missing was the breath support. I needed to do some vocal compression to prevent all the air coming out 'cos when I go through my break there's too much and I will end up in falsetto. So for me it was 2 ingredients: resonance, vocal compression
@bob.smeenk11 күн бұрын
That's great! Love to hear this! Enjoy your new voice 😁
@LucaAnamaria10 күн бұрын
Just a tip: you wanna control the airflow by keeping your intercostals and abs engaged on the exhale to stay expanded as long as you can (without tension). You don't want to be keeping the air back with your vocal cords alone. That's way too much work for such tiny cords. :) You don't want to introduce unnecessary tension into the vocal tract.
@LucaAnamaria10 күн бұрын
You should not feel any pain, strain, or discomfort at all in your larynx / throat. It needs to feel easy.
@LucaAnamaria9 күн бұрын
To clarify: You relax your abs and ribs on the inhale so that they can expand, and then engage them to stay expanded when exhaling to control your airflow and slow down the exhale. But don't fight against the exhale either--let the body go back to neutral. You are just slowing it down a little. :)
@bob.smeenk9 күн бұрын
Great explanations LucaAnamaria, thanks! I'm working on a breath support video to hopefully tackle this subject once and for all :)

This is really cool and a novel approach, or at least something I haven’t come across. From what I gather you’re basically renaming terms like chest voice, mixed voice, head voice and have come up with your own “placements” combining these with different levels of breath support. You should consider a Patreon or some kind of membership for weekly exercises that help navigate your system as I think you have really got down how to sing high without damaging or straining anything. The traditional vocal exercises everywhere don’t address a lot of these things and just put up patterns to sing along too. Subscribed and look forward to more.

Hello, First of all, as an opera student, I want to say that your videos are the most helpful content I’ve found on KZbin about singing. Please keep making them! I have a bass-baritone voice that can reach up to G5, but I think I’ve been practicing with the wrong technique. After B4, I start lifting my larynx, and as you mentioned in one of your previous videos, I lose control of my breath and my voice becomes strained. Do you have any exercises you could recommend to help with this?
@bob.smeenk11 күн бұрын
Thank you so much :) I'm working on a video on breath support/control. It's a tricky one, so I don't know when it'll be done. But I think you'll love it. For now: it sounds like you try to sing with too much airflow/pressure up there. Some ways to fix that I mention in the video. An interesting exercise to try could be to pick a song, and before sing the first phrase, breathe out fully, then just open your mouth and let the air flow in. Not an active breath. Just open your mouth and let it happen. Then sing the line. Before the next line: pause and repeat. If you take in less air, less will want to come out. You can sing with a lot of air in your lungs, but you have to control it, and if you don't the air, it's a waste of energy. Hope that helps :) More in the upcoming video!

Good classification. Similar to CVT, but a little simpler. A, B, C are Neutral, Curbing and Overdrive/Edge. But the author imposes fewer restrictions and makes the classification more on sound than on sensations or real physiological processes. I would not recommend to use it like theory in your lessons, but keeping it in your head as a quick reference is fine. Thanks for video and this classification
@bob.smeenk13 күн бұрын
Thanks for your thoughtful comment! I appreciate your comparison and am glad you found the classification helpful. While there are certainly some similarities to other methods, my goal is to offer singers a flexible and easy to use tool that they can quickly adapt to their unique voice and style, rather than a strict theoretical framework. Exactly like you said: it's for quick reference, a cheat sheet, not a complete singing method.

Thanks for sharing an interesting vocal tips how to simplify singing a difficult parts of the song method to sound better. It is good to isolate the song fragments part only out of the 4 then apply all to the 7 vocal tips. Phase 1 : Simplify the pitch, slow down the tempo, split the fragment parts smaller to individual word syllable, choose friendly vowel to sing , play with vocal color voice effects. Phase 2 The return practice where each parts of phase 1 is perfected. Phase 3 over - practice increase the difficulty of each stage or change the key of the song if this helps. I hope I got this right and will try to apply it for my own singing to sound good.
