Norman was one of the kindest, most decent men and one of the greatest singers I ever knew. I was lucky enough to have him as my voice teacher and after my own 32 year international career, due in a large part to Norman’s guidance, I strive now to pass on his wisdom to my own students. Dearest Norman….never to be forgotten. ❤

Lovely to hear this, thank you. Helga’s beautiful artistry shines through despite the recording quality. After retiring from her career as recitalist she became a sought-after singing teacher in the 1970s -80s, working eight hour days, always employing pianists (Roger Vignoles, Antony Saunders and Mark Elder were regulars). I was lucky enough to learn from her - unforgettable.

What a great informative program. Listen to how show people and interviewers used to speak to each other politely and intelligently.

Drinking gourds were placed hanging from trees and sometimes really high in the tree. If you find one on the ground it was a warning to stray from the trail because of some type of danger. If a drinking gourd had a bird feather that told them there were chickens nearby so be quiet when Passing through.

I am a fan of Ruth Welting. I'm surprised that she did not interpolate more stratospheric high notes where they are customarily added by high sopranos

He makes most other tenore leggeri sound like amateurs! A young soprano and I had a coaching with Mme. Alarie on the duet La ci darem from Don Giovanni. To demonstrate the acting Mme Alarie sang most of it with me. They both appeared in that opera here in Vancouver In 1959, with Joan Sutherland making her N/ American debut as Donna Anna.

I agree: this is a disservice to all involved, with the possible exception of Boulez, who has almost NO feeling for the idiom and character of the music. In fact, he seem totally disinterested, even embarrassed by the final Oath. The Cleveland Orchestra sounds dry and scratchy, and the chorus (which I joined a few months later to sing the Shostakovich 13th), sounds ragged, without any real depth or richness of sound (it was an all-volunteer group). Oddly enough, this was the second and final season of the esteemed Margaret Hillis as choral director, who was jetting between Cleveland and Chicago at the time. She would be succeeded by Robert Page in September '71, who began to seriously re-build the chorus on a long-term basis. But, in my opinion Boulez + Berlioz = pointless, at least during this point in his career. (I heard his Mahler 5th with Cleveland in March of '70...also pointless). On the other hand, his Cleveland/Debussy Images (Sony, 1968) is the finest you will EVER hear.

Though there are others, three great sopranos-- Eileen Farrell, Beverly Sills and Cristina Deutekom-- put family before career. As a result, they didn't leave as voluminous a performance or recording legacy as they otherwise might have had. Farrell's husband (a NYC cop) and children had to share her with the world. Strangely, her voice barely aged over decades, and her Indian summer of terrific jazz recordings which she made in her late '60s and early '70s and beyond are marvels to listen to. The interpretive depth of her last decade of recordings is a thing of beauty.
