Just watched. Watched last week's video but didn't comment. Again, great advice. Just how I started. Pulled out my 4 string and was playing along to "Katy Lied" by Steely Dan. A great record for feeling the rhythm. Chords yes, arpeggios yes, and some chord inversions. Fun stuff. Thanks Jon.

If a piece of sheet music in bass clef has seven sharps on the ledger lines, what key is the music in?
@ForBassPlayersOnlyКүн бұрын
It’s either C# major or A# minor. They both have the same key signature. FYI, It doesn’t matter what clef it is. The number of sharps or flats indicates the same key signature regardless of whether it’s in bass clef, treble, tenor, or alto clef, etc. Thanks for asking!

Your work with Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, Adrian Belew is just incredible musicianship. What was it like to play with Buddy Rich? Was he critical of the bass lines he wanted you to play on his album?

Listen and play along. That's how you learn. I grew up in LA when we had great radio stations. I played to the radio every day. The DJ's would slow down or speed up records, so I had to learn to tune quickly. KRLA, KKJZ, KMET, and all the others played music all day. I learned blues, rock, jazz and experimental acid music. So now you really can't fool me. I've been there and done that. Listen and play along. That's how you learn. I played in bands all over LA for 40 years and bass is still the best instrument ever.

For added interest, just flat the M3rd to a m3rd - a half step lower: A Major chord to a minor chord, with just one note lowered. This 'move' increases your chord possibilities from 12 M chords to an additional 12 m chords - 24 chords to start composing or learning new songs. Jazz tunes, though, you add the 7th to the M or m 3 note chord, you create a 4 note chord. I like your approach to teaching (joyfully) !!

@ForBassPlayersOnly12 күн бұрын
Hope you had a happy birthday, gb! Listening and enjoying is always good, but don’t give up on yourself. Instead of comparing your playing to that of others, compare it to where you were a month ago, 6 months ago, a year ago. I bet you can do more now than you could then! BTW, theres an interview I did with Charlie Haden that’s published on forbassplayersonly.com, as well as several interviews with some of Metheny’s bass players, including Mark Egan and Linda May Han Oh. Check ‘em out. I think you’ll like them. Thanks, as always, for weighing in. 😁👍

Once again spot on. Loved your comment about "background". The bass is not background but foundation. When I listen to music it has always been the bass line I hear/feel first, it's what draws me in. If the foundation is weak there is a good chance I won't continue to listen.

Jon, I started playing bass 4 years ago at age 72 with my ukulele group. I have often wandered from your advice, but keep coming back to the three areas you mention. It mirrors advice from Victor Wooten and Rachel Webley (Ukulele Wales). When I stray from this advice, I end up trying to play exercises that often are beyond my dexterity, are not particularly fun, get discouraged, and stop playing for a while. I discovered your channel about 3 months ago. You keep refocusing me on playing what I can. As Rachel says, just playing root notes is enough to support a ukulele group. Thank you.

Do you play a 6-string?
@gb-tm9vg21 күн бұрын
I do not. I made that comment as a reminder that as long as you know what note you are on you can readily identify notes on the strings above and below you with B E A D G C F. The pattern never changes.
@gb-tm9vg22 күн бұрын
Hi Jon, I can't argue with anything you say. I salute you for what you bring to teaching. I love playing bass. As I alluded to in a previous comment, I learned the fretboard best by playing 2 string. For me music theory was served by keyboards, my first experience with music. Sometimes I think I am outside the scope of your lessons. Because I don't routinely play live I tend to experiment. Like today, I was playing one of my 3 string bases and my Les Paul guitar. I love to juxtaposition the role each guitar plays in a song. I love playing guitar parts on bass and playing bass parts on guitar. Just to hear how it sounds. Question, I assume you play keys and guitar. What are your thoughts on those instruments? What is your approach to them?
@ForBassPlayersOnly21 күн бұрын
Generally, I try to approach the music as a whole, rather than by instrument. In my experience, some songs, lines, grooves, etc., lend themselves to a particular instrument or sound. It’s whatever the music needs.

Jon' did you ever take a bass solo in a Broadway musical, or have to take one to cover-up a fellow musicians mishap to save the integrity of the show? Before you say anything, I know, what a question? But seriously, did you? 😐
@ForBassPlayersOnly24 күн бұрын
I may have had a few moments here and there where the bass was featured briefly, but I don’t remember having an actual solo. Although when I played Dreamgirls at the Burt Reynolds Theatre in Jupiter, Florida, at times it felt like the whole show was a bass solo! 😂
