I saw her sing her complete Butterfly in the house when I attended, (not at the Met ) it also was with tenor Barry Morell singing Pinkerton ( not this performance ) She of course was the stand out singer in the performance, with glorious flawless singing, a real class act American Soprano, on and off stage. RIP.

@Thearchivebeyondimagination good to know. Thanks! I love Nilsson's Turandot. Especially when there's a Calaf who's up to her (or close, as there was only one Calaf at her level, in my opinion)

In German....always difficult to listen....my ears are not convinced, not really...it is Verdi,ok, but same time not Verdi, too. It is not only the language....it is this atmosphere, too much german.....and the singers : a kind of miscast. Metternich is not a Macbeth ( though I estimate him but not in this repertoire). And Varnay....no. Ludwig Weber : my favourite Gurnemanz since my first hours with Wagner.

Caballé is in a state of grace in this rather late Devereux. She's in finer form than her more well-known telecast from 1977 where her top was somewhat insecure. Here the pianissimo cooperates better and despite some lazy diction, she sounds more concentrated than two years before. The sound is also excellent. Toczyska sounds juvenile, passionate with a bit of mushy diction. Bini isn't the most elegant Roberto but he's expressive and solid vocally. Pons is monochromatic but reliable vocally, save for some intonation lapses. A fascinating performance overall.

Thank you I ve had this for many years but not in such excellent sound. ES very popular in Naples some thrilling tapes of performances - after her ‘career was over’ described as awful by people who were nt there or have nt heard them….received opinions…repeated…and repeated….soon become gospel. The rest of the cast no bad either!

Caballe always beautiful. And wonderful in bel canto. But I can’t help thinking that Sills and Gencer offered way more insight into this role with less gorgeous voices.

Even just a few years into his career at the Met and Warren is already in prime form. He had slowly been assuming the great Verdi baritone roles as Lawrence Tibbett's health declined and his Eri tu here is even better than in the radio broadcast from January of 1944. Walter takes the middle section very slowly and dreamily as he knows Warren's phenomenal breath control is up to the challenge. As huge as his voice was at full throttle, Warren's mezza voce was superb, few baritones since have had the same ease of production. Zinka is also in slightly better voice here than in the radio broadcast in January but Peerce sounds better at the Met, there's some inflexibility in his tone here. It seems a bit odd to hear the Met's reigning Fricka, Ortrud and Brangane reading palms but Thorborg does well enough and Frances Greer does what she can with Oscar. Thanks for posting!

I attended this performance. It was originally scheduled to be Lohengrin with Rysanek. But Birgit settled her tax case and was available. My recollection is that Mignon Dunn was perhaps the best Klytemnestra I’d ever seen, Birgit got an “A” for outstanding effort, and Rysanek should’ve switched to Klytemnestra long before this.
@WotanKlingsor6 күн бұрын
Rysanek as Klytämnestra is a joke! By the way, she still recorded Elektra after this

Back in the wonderful days when there was CULTURE on prime time television. Yes, some parts of Voice of Firestone could be cheesy, especially the opening and closing songs the singer had to do but the production values for some of the sets was pretty solid. The singers were good sports as well, often getting done up in completely over the top costumes, such as the period dress Dame Joan Sutherland wore when she sang "The Soldier Tired" or Rise Stevens singing Joan of Arc's aria while wearing a suit of chain mail armour that looked like it had been done by crochet! I've seen the "Vissi d'arte" a number of times, but some of the other selections are new to me and Renata is in glorious voice. Thanks as always for posting!
